Alright, i have a 29 gallon tank (30 inches long) on a metal stand.
My friend is giving away his 30 Gallon tank (36" L), without a stand.
And to be honest, i like the longer tanks a lot more versus the tall tanks

Just wondering what you guys thought of putting a 36" in long stank on a 30" long stand. I was thinking about putting a 36" long peice of wood in between the tank and the stand to give more support?

Any ideas on making that work? Or should i just not do it altogether?

I really don't think that is a good idea. As I understand it, the entire perimeter of the tank must be supported- that is how the tank is designed. It's really best to just buy a stand.

Someone on these forums posted threre tank pics and thats the way they had it, the tank was nice but as posted by others i dont think it would be in the best intrest of the tank, even if you did use plywood to make it 36"..Truely suporting the whole tank would be the safest....:)

I'm sure if you used 3/4in plywood you would be able to put that tank on that stand. But i wouldn't do it either because my 29g on the metal stand is a little shakey now. I wouldn't feel OK with 50+ more pounds on it.

That's actually a good point. I was asking about that a month or two ago, as I had wht I wanted to put the tank on in mind, but it was too short. I was given the same advice, not worth the risk, regardless of support. No one mentioned that the weight of any added bracing might be a factor as well, but it will. My 20/29G tank is designed to support 350 pound (so the box said) and with a 20L on it I dunno that I'd want a 29G on there instead. Maybe if it was solid oak or something, but most common stands are likely strong enough to support on what fits on them and NOTHING more.

Duh... 29g to 30g is only 8 more pounds.

It's a toss up IMO dude but I still wouldn't do it.

Don't do it!!!! There are great chances that it will crack eventually with the uneven distribution of pressure points and weight... just don't take the chance, I'm sure you'll regret it even if it takes a year or more.... it WILL happen :( Good luck getting a better stand!

Let's see....8Lbs. per gallon....x......=.....nope.

Don't chance it.

well its only 8 more pounds, considering i'd be going from a 29 to a 30 gallon.
it's not so much teh stand im worried about, it's the tank.

so far its not looking so good?
