37 gallon + sump reef log

Did not see that first time around..i would not have one of them, they are very territorial and can be nasty towards new inhabitants to the tank...And can be a real pita when you come to remove them...

Well thanks to inexperience and the local fish store - I bought 4 baby damsels since according to the wife - were just so darn cute!. Then I talked with a buddy of mine and he didn't hesitate to slap me. I think that 3 of the 4 devil fish may end up in the sump?

You want to be aiming for around 8.2 - 8.3 area for your pH....

Personally, i like Reef Crystals for salt...has great added elements and never suffered any pH issues when using it...

It's been a toss up between the two. I came really close to Reef Crystals since they had a bucket 'kit' but I had some of the items already so opted for the Instant Ocean instead. I can always try it later.

I would not use crushed coral as your substrate, its notorious for trapping detritus and causing elevated nitrate readings, my advice would be to stick to the sugar grade aragonite reef sand....

My 10 gallon has some crushed coral + GARF grunge - so I think I can put that in the sump? Or should I take a small portion of it and add a new layer of aragonite?

Just caulerpra on its own would be fine, dont really see a need for the mangroves...

Just an opinion of course..

Niko

I'm aspiring to 'overdue' it! ;)

Thanks for the replies guys!

ahaha "my friend didnt hesitate to slap me" that made me laugh
hey, i got osme fish today?
oh yeah? what kinds?
dams-*slap!*

im sure if youw ant to give them to me my angler woudl love them :-P
also, i wouldnt recomend putting crushed coral inthere, especialy if you are looking to do a reef. sand is much better. also, i think you said you were thinking about crushed coral because you wanted jawfish? jawfish in the wild actualy burry themselves in sand, not crushed coral. dont ask me how it stays so sturdy, cause i dont exactly know. haha. but it does. he will be happy in either, but i think your corals will thank you for the sand.

I'm not kidding either he was mad at me, then started ranting about local fish stores this, that and the other.

Anyways -here's the scoop:

Display tank - ONLY 50lbs of fine sugar sand
Sump - MAYBE leftover live cursed coral (*crushed) from currently running 10 gallon

The jawfish will be quite happy in the display tank since it will only be live rock and sugar sand, I'll put the devils in the new 10 gallon sump - hehe.

I'm ordering some Cell-Pore from drsfosters in the next couple days too

Here's a pic of the tank from last night. I added some of my live rock from the 10 gallon. I got my devil fish in there as well - they seem to like it - till they decide to grow horns and terrorize every thing.

Anyways - I need more rock, lots more rock and some time.

That's actually pretty cool plumbing! Wish I had set my tank up like that.

Thanks man! Hopefully it will function as well as it looks

Next I want to do something even better, but I need a 75+ gallon tank, and a sugar mama!

coming along really nicely.

Thank you!

I've added some of the finer sand from my previous 10gallon to my sump (sifted out all of the crushed coral last night). How deep should the sand be in a sump? I was thinking at least 2-3 inches? If so I need to go and pick up some aragonite. Also, how much LR should I put in there? 10lbs?

I'll post some pics of the sump area tonight - I was too tired and pretty much started falling asleep starring at a dust cloud - but oddly it was still interesting.

I'm going to get another 50lbs of LR and place it in the back. That should bring me up to about 70lbs of LR, however that will have to wait till next paycheck. hehe.

Pics to come soon.

mmmmmmmmmm spoken like a true reefer. We have a lot in common with the other kind of reefer. Like normally boring objects can provide a lengthy period of entertainment.
