37g big enough?

Ok I'll have to look into some of those then.

Anyone wanna put any input on what they would house if they had a 37g tank? It's not a 37g high it's 36" long

Yea I believe were going to the planted. At first I didn't know if cichlid did ok with plants so the debate was either a cichlid tank or a planted tank with blue neon tetras in it with other fish.

I have a 37 too. I wanted to house an interesting cichlid and after alot of research decided on a JD. They avg about 8" as adults. You need to be very diligent about wc. And heavy filtration but if you want an interesting fish go for it. I

A 37g tank is to small for a JD, 55g is the minimum for one JD.

I agree a 37gal is to small for a single JD for long term short term it would be ok but upgrade would be needed. I got 5 JD's I bought when there were like an inch or less put them in a 20gal for the time being and there to beautiful of a fish to keep in a small tank plus they get to big 8-10" fish but has been said to be able to reach 12" long with males.

Ide stick to looking at apisto's or rams or a single Angel fish. If getting Blue Rams make sure there German Blue Rams there are other blue rams that or hormone induced to get those amazing colors but there short lived. There is also a new strain of ram out the Electric blue ram which from what ive been told are as hardy as German Blues. Just somethings you should know or look into if going with Blue Rams.

You're likely to spend more on a blue ram imported from Europe (not all are "German" btw) than finding a local breeder. Another option would be bolivian rams. Not as striking as blue rams IMO but they are more tolerant.

:iagree:

I keep both Bolivian rams(Altispinosa) and Blue rams (Ramirezi)
in general Bolivians are hardier but less colorful.

they have plenty of color but not as vibrant as the blue rams.

the Bolivians are also larger. but for me, more difficult to find.

Blue rams are less tolerant of poor water.. one reason why they are often paired with Discus.
they like warmer temps too.
bolivians 78-80 f
blue 80-84f
blue rams are pretty vibrant colored. I prefer the regular finage and colors. but they can be found in gold morph and electric blue.
there are also long finned varieties as well as ballon/angel rams.(IMO these loof funny)

I agree a 55 is the optimum for a jd but don't make it seem like I am a super ignorant aquarist who cares little about my fish. I take very good care of him. 40 gallons will be ok for a single jd.
