I'm actually posting for a friend that I have converted to a fish nerd-
she just got a 44 gallon tank and has decided that she would like to have some combination of neon tetras, tiger barbs, zebra danios and silver dollars. Is this feasible and does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Thanks
 
silver dollars get big and they do best in groups/schools. and maybe a bit much for a 44 (if you get a school of them).

also they eat plants..so no live plants (fyi)

tiger barbs can be nippy..(schooling/shoal fish)
danios are very active(also a schooling fish)
neons are nice(schooling fish)
 
ok what about???

Ok she has decided against the silver dollars and the tiger barbs...now she's thinking a large school of the neons, a smaller school of rummynose tetras, and would like a few larger fish- maybe around 3 inches. Suggestions?
 
could add rams(bolivian) oto's or small catfish(rubberlipped or bn)
school of cory's
tetras larger schools

I love SA cichlids but most won't do well with neons
 
Hello all--

So I am the new fish nerd mentioned above. I'm trying to decide what kinds of fish would be appropriate and enjoyable. However, since reading through the posts on this page, I'm getting more than a bit overwhelmed.

I do enjoy the smaller schooling fish, like neons, but feel that a few larger fish would be a nice contrast. Would a few mollies suffice? I read that they get up to 4". Is that an accurate figure? I would like some variety in species to jazz it up a bit as well (aiming for 3-5 species total). I would like to make use of all the water levels.

Additionally, I still need to outfit this tank with filter(s), heater(s), gravel, plants (I think I'm going to stick with artificial for now), etc. This is looking to be a long process before I actually get this tank up and running. I'm not in a hurry though, so that's ok with me.

Summary: neons (love 'em), rummynose, panda cories, harlequin rasboras, danios, hatchetfish, glass tetra, platy, molly, swordtail, and kribensis are all attractive to me. Which are inappropriate for a beginner (peaceful community) tank? What sort of numbers could I have? I am planning on going same sex if I decide to keep any livebearers in this tank.

Or should I just get a couple of fancy goldfish, some hefty filtration, and simplify things?

probably should have started your own thread but..

most of the fish you mention are good community fish.
more appropriately ..what size tank are you planning. some of the fish you mention are schooling fish or prefer to have numbers(tetra for instance are more comfortable in numbers 6 being the minimum)
if you have craigslist availabl you might want to check that out. you can find some good deals in ther..there are also soe people trying to recover what they paid..good luck!

I would skip goldfish unless you plan on a really big tank with lots of filtration
 
Starrider, I think this thread was started about her anyway LOL. ;-) She has a 44-gallon, as mentioned above.

aschnel, welcome to AC! dewilde and you, welcome to the fold, mwa ha ha! Soon fish nerds will rule the earth! OK, maybe not. But at least here we are in good company :)
 
I would get some african butterly fish for the top, corys or clown loaches for the bottom, and tetra' for the mid?
 
Thanks for all the help! Ok so I'm thinking: 3 peppered or panda cory cats, 5 rummynose tetras, neons, 5 zebra danios, and +/- 1 male betta. I would like the school of neons as the focus, so the question that remains is:

how many neons can I have with the above listed fish in a 44 gallon?
