so i have owned this 44 gallon corner tank and it has changed many times but is now in a place where it will not be moved ever again unless something very bad happens to it.
I really want to do a planted lush tank again with schools of small fish such as neons and a few other community species.

My idea so far as i have very nice sand in there now is to make a square planter to set in the tank with plant substrate so as the sand and dirt mixture will not mix and have this as a lush larger planted area in the center.

I would then like to mix some gravel in the front of the tank with the sand to make a display center that slopes up to the planter with smaller cups if you will for grass and things of low laying nature to grow in

I would also like several cups in the sanded area to host plants as well

Plan on using some pieces of drift wood to add that onatural look.
i already have my metal halides and co2 and things to grow plants i just need some design ideas from other people to maybe throw in with my own after all two heads are better than one so a whole web site or fish freaks as my girlfriend calls us will hopefully result in a jaw dropping tank.

thank you in advance for any ideas you throw my way
Jesse

Overall your plan sounds fine. It is hard to design a layout in a pentagon shape but not impossible. I might consider moving the planted section off to the side or at least off center. Things that are placed dead center tend not to look very natural and I take it you are going for the natural look. But overall I think it sounds wonderful and you should have an awsome tank.

cool good idea putting it to the side

hmm, how tall is the tank. Sorry have no experience with such a design. I think the centerpiece idea would work great if the plants were large enough. A tiger Lotus or 2 would be an idea. If I were doing it, I would want to be certain the center piece dominated the tank. Ussually people stray away from this, but hear me out. With what you are doing sounds like what a lot of people do with coral tanks and such in a round tank.

yeah i saw this little tip... if you make 2 screens of plants it leaves the eye to wander and the mind to wonder and i did a step up with medium rocks as retaining walls

the tank is fairly tall and pretty wide from the two farthest corners thats why i want more of a centerpiece than varied and the back corner will be the heater and filter elements so that they are mostly hidden from view
