Ok I found a real nice 44g corner aquarium at a local pet store. I am plannin on some colorful fish for the tank.
12 harlequins or 20 neon tetra
6 panda cories
pair of rams
maybe one betta?
Any other suggestions?
What is the best substrate to use?
Best filters?
Lights?
I will be reading more on teh fish before just buying them. I will also do a fishless cycle.
Do I put the 20 tetra in first then a few days later add a group of others and so on?

Thanks everyone

Get cardinal tetras instead of the neon tetras, they are hardier once they have established and are normally healthier.

I'd just get a canister filter, very dependable, I'd also get like 50 watts of lighting in the tank, and fine gravel would be the best substrate.

I'd also get 3-4 rams, one male, 2-3 females, then return the ones he doesn't mate with since they will usually mate for life. I wouldn't get a betta with this tank due to the colors, it may feel the need to attack its mates!

what you got sounds good, but listen to what oddball said, he knows what he is talking about :)

Thanks for the help I am getting the tank today and probably get the fish friday. There are these really nice lil fish the pet shop has them labeled parrot fish, but I cant find any info on them on the net. Any ideas? they are whitish/blue, some are white/green or pink...

Those fish are usually dyed to make them more appealing... They are a type of cichlid, grows to 6-7 inches, I believe. If you wanted them, two would be the maximum amount of anything in that fish tank.

Lighting depends on if you plan to plant live plants or fake ones and what type of plants. I would try to get at least 2.0 watts per gallon if you want live plants. www.hellolights.com has a lot of convienent lighting options.

Good luck on your aquarium. :)

I just finshed reading the fishless cycle completely and the fish will wait till the cycle is done.

Or he could use established media, etc to cycle the tank... That would take a week, maybe
