Just received my beautiful Randalli pistol shrimp, done acclimating and put him in my 29. Hopefully he'll pair with my tiny orange spotted goby. On average how long would it take to pair? Are we talking days or months if at all.

Nice looking shrimp!

Crackin little dude there...great purchase...If your lucky, a few days for them to click...however, you do have to be aware that sometimes they never do form a symbiotic relationship with a goby...Best, when you add it, to get it in the tank as close to the gobys main hangout as possible...

What substrate do you have in there, and how deep?? does the live rock sit on the sand or on the base of the tank?

Its the normal arognite sand I believe (caribsea type that comes in bag supposidly "live"). 2-1 inches deep with LR mostly resting on tank bottom, although some much smaller pieces are on top of sand. I dropped him on the corner of my gobies cave and he dissappeared in the back, so I guess I'll have to wait and see! Can't wait.

Being honest, your sandbed is not deep enough to support a burrowing critter....you should really have about 4 or so inches, and the subtrate of mixed fine and medium grade sand to allow the shrimp to burrow and build a tunnel complex...also, just keep a watchfull eye on the rock which is resting on the sand...the potential for collapse is there...

Good luck....

Does a sand bed that deep require a plenum? Also, if setting the rock on the aquarium bottom would you recommend any cushioning between the rocks and the glass/acrylic?

No, no plenum required...

Normally, when sitting rock on the bottom of the aquarium, its common for people to use "egg crate" to sit the rock on, rather than having the rock directly on the glass...

See below for a pic of egg crate, for those whom do not know what i am refering too...Its basically just plastic squared sheeting, about half inch deep...

ahhhh - thanks. What are your thoughts on the use of a plenum? (never mind do not want to hijack this thread) thanks again for the answer (I am prepairing to set up my first SW tank - a 75 Gal with a built in filter) Hopefully I can get some shrimp like this - they look great! :thm:
