Hi,
I just got a 46g bowfront, and I was thinking of cichlids. I was wondering if there was a larger cichlid that would fit comfortably in my tank, is extremely fun to whatch, possibly get along with a few cories and a school of dither fish (this isnt that important cories would be nice though), and a fish that you will for sure get attached to, i mean like having the oscar personality really.......... i was looking at parrots cichlids actually, what do you think of them? I really just whant something impossible to get tired of. Any help would be extremely appreciated.
Thnx

I have a couple of parrot fish, and they are really personable. They're a blast to watch when they're mating, shaking their bodies. I had one that would do loop d loops. As far as the cories, they should be fine. I had one temporarily in a community tank, only thing I ever lost were neons, which never lasted long for me anyway. I know a lot of people don't like them because they're hybrids, but they are neat. Just make sure to get one that isn't dyed a funky color.

Thank you very much for the info. I just saw that blood parrots are hybrids though and are often inbred so i dont think this would be to great of a fish for me. I was just reading a care sheet on angelfish though adn saw they were less agressive and lived longer in lower temperatures, I also saw black skirt tetras were adaptable to many temeratures, then I found the weather/dojo loach and and saw how much everyone likes these and that they like cold water trhough sub tropical waters. I was wondering if itd be okay in my tank to have 1 angelfish, 6-10 blackskirt tetras, 2 dojo loaches, and maybe another type of schooling fish or gourami. I dont know if this would be overstocked and your the forum i trust more than anyone else for communities do you guys think this would be okay? If not do you guys have any suggestions on a really fun tp wahtch community tank?
thnx again

That sounds like it would be ok to me, but I'm known for "overstocking" some tanks.

Have you looked into salvinis or other cichlids that stay small? They are awesome fish and you can breed them and make a few bucks;)

Sorry didnt mean to sound like a jerk I think im getting a bit to anxious about the tank. Thanks for the new suggestion too, I did just start looking into smaller cichlids when you posted and ran into the mbuna tanks and thought they were amazing. DO you guys think i might be able to have a smaller species malawi tank? If so could you maybe post some of the species thatd be good and how many and i could do a ton of research of course into it. Sorry I ask so many questions and sound like a jerk.
thnx :o

I would say go with a malawi tank. At 46g, you can hold at least 18 good sized african cichlids. The best way to learn of species is to window shop at places like bluegrasscichlids.com or cichlidsrus.com

Check these out, I'm sure you will find some uniques species that you like. Then, check your LFS :)

If anyone knows about breeding cichlids, help is appreciated (thread below).
