46g stocking question

I will be cycling this 46 gallon tank beginning christmas day. So with that going on i have time to make decisions of what fish to keep. My only problem is what can i do? What would be a good combo for the tank? I wanted to do an oscar but now realize it is too small a tank. I like some interesting fish with some personality.
 
My Gourami has tons of personality he's a dwarf gourami I'm sure the other larger kinds of gourami have personality too.
Puffers have personality but that would kind of limit your tank to puffers...
I'm new to the hobby i'm sure you'll get a bunch of good suggestions.
 
If you like cichlids you could try a firemouth of two in that size aquarium. They are beautiful fish especially the males.
