5 Gal Inhabitants Advice

Hey Toss in a trio of dwarf live bearers aka least kilies and I think you would have a neat little tank. :)
The females reach a max of 1 inch while the males are 1/4 of inch big. Tiny little fish and a blast to watch and would thrive well with your cories.

Hmmm that is the first time i have heard of these fish. And after doing an hours research already they look great! :)

I love the idea of having so many more fish, hence so many more personalities.
However they are so small 0.25/0.5 inches (males), are they even worth having if they are so small, inactive and tending to hide. While i am also scared of them breeding, i have read they breed continuously! Also how would i go about stopping them getting sucked up the filter or not damaging them when cleaning? Ahh i know so little about these new delightful fish you have informed me of lol  !

But I have already started to think of inhabitant numbers if I were to get them instead of the corys. Maybe 10 and some shrimps to help clean up after them? I like it :)
I do not think I would mix the corys with the least kilies. I am really going for a species tank..

I keep about 15-20 in my 5 gallon tank, they just dart in and out of the plants and are not that shy. The males are about the size of guppy fry. But they are pretty cool. As for filtration goes, I use a sponge filter, but I think a small undergravel filter would be fine as well. I am thinking on setting a second tank like this up. Just do plenty of water changes and you should be ok.

also, where do you find these least killies? they sound fun, but i've never seen one anywhere
You can find some at your local fish club, there are always live bearer freaks in every city and club and they should have some to spare if you ask nicely, or ask your lfs and see if they can get you some. If not, I have a link of a dealer who has them.

I use a sponge filter

The filter that is coming with the tank i intend on buying is a '3 stage filtration with a coarse and fine sponge, carbon sachet and moving bio wheel’. I presum this is ok?

Not sure about where FreddytheFish is from but...Not in Essex England they do not. I long ago searched for any local aquarium clubs, and not one. My supplys will be coming from:
Tank - Argos
Fish and Plants - Fairly Local Aquarium Shop
Feed and Ornament - Local Pet Shop

So unless the fairly local aquarium shop has any least kilies, this could be my major problem. Unlike with the cories which i know they have plenty of :( :)

Most of the "cycling" products commonly sold in stores are worthless. Unless you can find biospira (you might be able to order it online?) I would not waste the money. Going fishless would probably be easiest. Especially if you're going with the corys, I would not subject them to any cycling. Someone mentioned already that the dwarfs can be kind of sensitive and I think the regular ones can be too....

Oh Holly9937 i did not intend on using the fish in the cycle.
As i said earlier, i am going to cycle the tank befire i buy the fish.
What i was asking was if there were any products anyone would recommend to cycle my tank...with out fish in the tank...

Bringing Up Puffers again

I think feeding dwarf puffers can be cheaper than most fish - because you can bread your own. The eat snails and breedings snails is VERY easy and VERY cheap. Plus it can be fun to watch them hunt for snails  . I have 6 total fish in my 5.5G 2 DP's and 4 ottos. Boy are the ottos hardy workers.

As for the room, some people store odd things as well as soaps cleaners etc in the laundry room - just to be safe is all. Accidents can and will happen.

Cycling....I have heard most products are snake oil - do nothing. But I have read BioSpora (I think) does well. If this is the first tank - I would do a fishless cycle - cheap and does not require commercial products. There are plenty questions/answers on this forum for fishless cycling. Otherwise, cycling from another established tank can speed up the process by a lot.

Good Luck on your quest - it is always fun!!!

NEW UPDATE

Just to let you all know, i have come across a better deal tank wise :)
The 5 gallon tank i was going to get with the filter, heater and one light was priced £45

But i have been shopping around, and i am not intending on getting a 7.5 gallon tank with two filters, heater and two lights. In addition the gravel (pebbles), bog wood/ornaments and some plants are getting thrown into the package. This is from my fairly local Fairly Local Aquarium Shop for £95, i also politely asked for some substrate from one of their established tanks so help kick start the package :)

Just thought I would let you know.
Also though, some bad news, I have asked absolutely every aquarium place within a 5 mile radius of me, and none ever have least killies fish in stock, and when I asked why they just said they are not particularly colourful to display :(
So once the tank is cycled I plan on keeping my new idea of having 5 dwarf corys and a betta.

Thanks for the advice people ;)
