I'm very fortunate to still have 2 healthy grandmas, but to have 2 that like tanks with water and animals in them, UNHEARD OF LUCK! One of my grandmas is the one that has the 10 gallon tank, the other doesn't have a tank but called me today. She asked me if I had an aquarium because she wanted a turtle. I told her yes and she asked if she could use it. I said yes but I have to do a bit of research first. So, this is what we have: One 5 Gallon Glass Aquarium, One 16x8 in. fluorescent hood, and One Tetra Whisper 2-10 Filter. I plan on making the paludarium 50% land, 50% water, with the water being 3-4 in. deep. I know I need a substrate, but do I need any other equipment? What about plants or rocks, should I get any of those? And finally, what kind of turtle should she get that will stay small? All help would be greatly appreciated!

to be honest you shouldnt get a turtle for any tank less then 30 gallons they just get to big for them doesnt matter what turtle you get as far as i know there are no turtles that will live in a 5 gallon tank sorry

Are u sure?

I would have to agree, the least i would start out with would be a 20g long, for a 2-3 inch turtle. But don't get it if you can't upgrade once it gets bigger. 5g is just way to small.

Are there any turtles that only get to be 2-3 inches that can start with a 5 gallon but eventually will go into a 30 gallon?

There are none. A 2-3" turtle will need MUCH larger than a 5 gallon, and IMO I wouldn't start with anything less than 30 gallons.

A 5 gallon leaves you with limited options. I'm not experienced with them, but maybe some small crabs would be better than a turtle. Though, I'm not sure if they would need brackish water or not...
Just throwing that out there.

Darn. Any other ideas?

Well, if she got a 30 gallon aquarium for it, and it had a hood, incandescent lighting, filter, thermometer, and substrate, what else would the turtle need? Plants, rocks, caves?
