5 Gallon Stocking

I just got a very small Dwarf Puffer for my 3 gallon and I love it. Very small but interesting fish.

I really should have a 5 gallon tank for him though, but I will probably move him to something larger eventually anyways. Right now he is smaller than a dime not even 1/2 an inch.

If your just starting out a 10- or 20 gallon might cost a little more up front but will be easier to maintain if you have the space.

Check out www.dwarfpuffers.com before you buy one.

You could probably keep a few guppies in there, mine seem to be much happier with at least one other of their kind.

As I understand it, the don't get much bigger than that ever.... anyone else?

Also I think the 1/ 5 gallon thing is more about making sure multiples have enough territory than that a single puffer would need more space than that.... I really can't imagine a DP needing more space than your 3G. They don't need open swimming room, they don't really do that. If anything, it would seem that they need a lot of interesting landscaping, and features to explore. But maybe it is different if they are used to eating brime from an eyedropper vs hunting their own snails all day.

fyi on the dwarf puffers....had them in my tank with my betta....went on vacation for a week and came back and my bettas fins were almost completely gone...he was so petrified he wouldn't leave his cave and he was a very aggressive fish to begin with... i worried about the puffers getting picked on...but they went back and thanks to melafix i think his fins are prettier now than before...they are coming in fuller, brighter and very soft looking but still wouldn't trade that for all the stress he went through....i felt so bad!

Well I think mine will get a bit bigger right now it is only 1/2 inch long. 3G might be enough, but giving this tank to my sister for her beta (that is in a torture chamber size tank right now) is a good excuse to get upgrade him/her to a 5 or 10 gallon :)

I would think a betta would be one of the worst fish to put with a puffer. I won't put it in my tank with my buggies.
