5 gallon tank new

i filled up a 5g tank last week and added aqua plus conditioner. i waited a week and added 3 small plattys. i am doing a fish cycle. within 24hours on e of them got some white stuff on his mouth and died shortly after. i will check my water later on for amonia,nitrites,nitrate etc.. if i have high levels do i perform a water change today even though the fish have been in there for only 2 days?
