5 Mystery Fish Dead on the Road

Its hard to say how they got there. I live on a major highway and I find all sorts of wierd stuff in my yard when I cut the grass...
I have found...

Luggage,
bedliners...
Underwear (Only wonder whats going on in that car?!?!)
Furniture..
Once I found a Pool filter.
Magazines & books..
hubcaps and Misc car parts...

but never found any fish..

That's actually a nice looking fish...much nicer than some that are in the trade. Wonder why these fish never made it into circulation?

In any case, this fish does seem to fit your description

Thats what one person did at Petsmart when the guy tried to "donate a foot long oscar". He just couldn't take care of it anymore. The manager denied his requests cause 1)No room 2) Its huge! 3)Look at 1 and 2.

In the end the guy leaves with his oscar in a bucket... 10-15 minutes later the manager comes back into the store with a dead oscar. The guy left the oscar in the parking lot and left.

Those pumpkinseed fishes are cuuuute! how big to the get in the wild, and where the heck are they found?

I dont think they were goldfish, although perhaps he doesnt know what some of the fancy goldfish and other varieties look like?
 
Pumpkinseeds generally grow to around 7"-8", and I'd assume can be caught in any lake in north america, or at least they're in abundance here in NY. We've used a diy fish trap (similat to minnow trap) last summer, one actually lived in my brother's planted tank for a while, but then suddenly died for some reason, they do grow pretty slow though.
 
Pumpkinseeds are cold water fish. Probably the reason they never make it into the mainstream tropical hobby.
 
The pumpkins and sunnies can get quite large and up to 3-4 lbs. Fun to catch, bony to eat, and often considered a nuisance fish. I catch them all the time and have caught some very large. And as was said, they are coldwater and not all that colorful when an adult.(I think they darken to hide better).
