55 divided betta tank

i personally would want the fish to be able to see each other. yes, they will flare like heck for the first week or so, but soon will settle down. many people say that is is unhealthy for male bettas to flare all the time, but mine are perfectly healthy and they have view of each other at all times, plus a view of my two females as well.

I know this is putting human attributes towards fish, but would you want to spend your whole life isolated from other people?

My Crowntail hates others so I think he prefers to be alone. He's by my computer though and we interact quite a bit, he enjoys watching the monitor.

You most likely will have to make your own divider, or find someone who will make custom dividers for you. I've searched for dividers that have a bit in the middle which I can remove now and then to show the bettas their neighbours, flaring might stress them out, but I can check their fins a bit easier this way and then they usually get bored with each other anyways. I've had no such luck :(

Guess I will have to make my own.... any idea's for a removable piece type divider?

they make colored acrylic.

also, the cutting board idea is kinda nice, but watch out for plastic ones containing microban. those will wreak havoc on a fish tank. also, certain kinds of silicone contain the same thing.

Thanks for all the advice. We are researching ideas on how to create our own. Will update with what we come up with

This is what I would do, if I was making a Beta tank. I would divide the tank in half, long ways, with a 4' x 18" dark piece of plexiglass, with either small holes drilled, or lines cut, to allow for water flow.

then I would make cuts, 9 inches down every foot, taking a separate 12" x 18" piece with the same holes drilled, and the same 9 inches cut, and make interlocking pieces. Then I would seal them with silicone. I would set the tank up long ways dividing a room (like between a living room and a dining room or something) and position a canister filter, so the spray bar actually runs down the middle of the tank, spraying in both directions down the tank. This would let you have 8 beta compartments, four seen from each room (or each side of the tank.)

If I couldn't use both sides of the 55, I would have a hard time convincing myself to do it.

'Just my thoughts...

Thats a really neat idea if I had money and space I would totally do that!

Another thing you could do is get a bunch of those breeder net box things, loosely sew them together, and rig up a "floating" barracks. that way when you do water changes, the barracks will go down with the water level and come back up when you refill the tank. I'm not sure what you would use to make it float (styrofoam blocks?), or you could somehow attach it to the top edge of the tank with clips of some sort. This way you have an undivided 55 if you ever want to use it as a big tank in the future, and you don't have to rip out a bunch of partitions and silicone. And with this setup you could have one lucky fish that gets the run of the tank that is not taken up by the barracks, just make sure that there is space between the individual compartments for him to come up for air.

Maybe you could find some nylon mesh at a fabric store and make your own to save money, as well as having the compartments custom size. just a thought.

This is what i want to do with my empty 20 once i have fry and they start getting aggressive with each other.

that sounds like a great idea.... could one heater heat all the compartments and the filter cycle the water good enough?
