I presently have 7 male peacocks, one female blue dolphin, and 4 yellow labs. I am using an outside filter and the RENA canister filter. I do weekly water changes and vacuum the gravel.
The LPS told me I should have a couple more peacocks to cut down aggression. The aggression is not that bad right now. A little chasing once in awhile. Should I leave well enough alone or add a couple more peacocks?
He also said I could safely add a male blue dolphin and a female jacobfreibergi with no problem. Does this sound right?
Also, would the crushed coral show off the colors of the cichlids better? I presently am using a black and white gravel.
I LOVE this site! You guys are so informative. I trust you more than I do the pet shop. :)

Hmmm... I'd say the reason the peacocks chase each other is because they are all male. It's usually better to have a 3 to 1 female to male ratio for a calmer tank. But since that'd mean adding 21 peacocks... heh... I don't think that's an option. :P I'd say if they aren't being aggressive to the point of injury, leave the peacocks as-is and don't add any females. That'd probably cause a riot among your males for her attention!!

As for adding a male dolphin... go for it... and another female for him as well. As for adding the other cichlid type, I'm not familiar with that species so I can't say for certain how well it would hold up as a single specimen in your tank to be honest, so I won't offer advice on that one. Maybe someone else can help you who is more informed. ^_^

As for the crushed coral... other than helping maintain pH, I can't see how it'd make your fish any more colorful. As long as you're keeping your alkalinity up in the right perimeters for your fish, I'd say a gravel change is unnecessary unless you're doing it for aesthetic reasons.

Personally? I like a dark fine gravel for my tanks... it makes the colors of the brighter cichlids POP!!! :D

LABs look fantastic on black gravel or sand... And I bet the blue dolphins would, too. Hope that helps.

a couple more peacocks will in my opinion only serve to increase rather than decrease aggression. you can't eliminate it totally .. we're talking african cichlids here. you've got a pretty heavily stocked tank already and if it were my tank, i'd leave well enough alone.

a female jacobfreibergi is going to be pretty drab, as are almost all female 'peacocks' and i'm not sure why you'd want to add one?

*smacks forehead* I soooo read this as him having an 85-gallon tank... man, either my mind is slipping or I didn't get enough coffee this morning!!

I agree... in a 55-gallon, you're pretty well stocked. Your fish may be small now, but once they grow to their full sizes in the next 4-6 years... you'll be pretty cramped. The LABs alone grow to be up to 4" in length. Peacocks and dolphins get as big or bigger. You might want to do some research on that and make sure your tank won't eventualy be overstocked once what you DO have matures. If so, I'd ditch some of the peacocks and the lone dolphin first, but that's me...

Thanks for the input. After reading your comments, I decided to leave everything as it is. All the fish I have in there now are getting along pretty good. Every once in awhile one will get cranky and do some chasing, but not too often. I sure don't want to create problems for the tank occupants and for me. When I first got interested in the Africans, it was suggested that I go with an all male peacock tank since I wasn't that interested in breeding them at this time. It sure is gorgeous, all those bright colors. Thanks again.

I know you said you will just leave thing as is, but I just have a couple ?'s. Any pic's of your tank, fish, rock you have, how big are the Aulonocara "Peacocks" now, what are they specifically (red ruby's, nigarra's, german reds, rubescens ect. see http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/african_cichlid_genus_gallery.php for a start to identify) some "peacock's" max @ 4" as big as 7". Any female's will for sure invite breeding, these are one one the easiest African's to breed & can spawn every 21 days. There is little to no true aggression in juvenile African's(aside from a weak fish, only the strongest survive) but as they get older they set up territories & aggression can become a real prob & expected aggression levels varies w/ the type of peacock(http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/category.php?cat=3). If it becomes a prob then you will have to increase the # fish, but w/ proper filtration & max aeration this is done all the time. 1 of my 55gl tanks is an Mnbuna/Trophous & I have 30 or so adult's at this time. It's loaded w/ (2"-3'') crushed coral as substrate, 110lbs or so of Holey Rock=9pcs. to divert attacker's, hide in & help keep my parameter's buffered. It has 2 Fluval 405 can filters(http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=14633&N=2004+22777) 1 in tank Fluval 205, 2 hang on whisher 60's & 4 aquaclear 30's powrhds blowin full air on the underwater gravel filter's upstack's, creating about 1900gph of filtration, like a breaker/surf zone. These paticular cichlid's are among the most aggressive & they're jammin, however this is the tank that I learned that "packing " a tank can & will, done correctly, correct an aggression prob. Sorry, this is a BIG picture, long range scenario w/ no black & white answer at least has been the case w/ my 25 yrs. w/ these incredible (African Cichlid's) fish.

There is some debate over the color of substrate effecting the color potential of fish, it seems that a wide variety of proper feeding has more to do w/ it then anything. The crushed coral (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=7322&N=2004+113554) is used to buffer, to reach the proper pH & GH/KH thru the leaching of it's (crushed coral/Limestone Holey Rock) chem properties into the water thus helping/wrking for you to keep your pH & GH/KH parameter's in line w/ out the extensive continuous use of buffering chem's having to be purchased, dosed, mixed i.e. more wrk. The same is true about the use of Holey Rock/ Lime Stone (http://stores.ebay.com/RockArtSource_Holey-Rock_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ2497538QQftidZ2QQtZkm) this concept is used widely by long time purist African & Marine hobbyist. This all helps significantly w/ easily maintaining your parameter's w/ 10-15% water changes every 5-7 days & only clean 1/3 of your gravel/substrate at a time unless sickness require's more.

What type of filtration do you have i.e. gph being filtered, underwater gravel filter, powerhds, canister's, ect. If you have to increase your fish #'s (bioload) then filtration will all play an intricate part of doing so successful. It is always easier to do so when they're young if you wait & have to add more, make sure to completely change all your scenery, rock, cave's ect. so as to disrupt any exsisting territories which is at the root of aggression & you need to add at least 3 fish at a time, any less, the new addition will be the center of everyone's attention. Sometimes aggression can be eased w/ frequent 5-7x's a day feeding's which sound's like allot, but isn't as long as all food is gone in 1-2 min. full bellies kinda take the steam out of them, not so worried about gettin their's.

If you actually read all this & aren't cross eyed by now then I hope this hasn't been to overwhelming, once the basic's are understood then its all cake. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/index.php is amazing along w/ most all it's link's, don't be affraid to make your purchases on-line, I'm sure you know this , but nearly EVERYTHING is 1/3 the price then if you buy in your LFS, no tax in most cases w/ minimal to no shipping cost, this includes fish(http://www.davesfish.com/ located in TX http://www.aquabid.com/ & w/ just a bit of research you should feel secure in doing so & happy that you saved a TON of money:), specially chem/water conditioner's BUY BULK. This is the way I have come to be able to have the most this hobby offers & more in the internet yrs. B4 dealing w/ LFS's just cost to much to really pursue the BEST CASE SCENARIO:)

More than just a bit more to consider:) would love to hear more about your gorgeous tank & its bright color's, PIC's, PIC's, PIC's:)
