55 gallon and filter advice

i would suggest getting a fluval, preferably a 304 or 404. i have a 404 in my 75 gal tank and it works perfectly, i would recommend it to anyone.

i've always used Whisper filters.. they work just fine 8)

Depends on the application. I'm big on Eheim filters, I have 2028Pro and recently acquired Ecco 2236. The Ecco has a nice setup and comes with four baskets and all media - it is rated for tanks up to 80g. Would be enough for you.

I also like aqua clear filters. I use these on smaller tanks and for bb tanks/quarantine tanks.

I would have to go with oscar83 cause the canister filters are very good I'm getting one for my 55

In my 55 gallon I have two aquatec (I think that's the brand) power filters. One came with the tank, and I bought the other one for like 35 dollars at walmart. Both are rated at 330 Gallons Per Hour, so with the two of them my water is being turned over 12 times per hour, which is pretty good filtration in my opinion. If you're going to keep fish that are known to be messy, you could do two Aquaclear 500s, which would be turning your water over almost 20 times an hour:eek: Aquaclears also have adjustable waterflows and are easy to maintain, and two of them would probably still cost less than a canister.

You might also look into filstar, either xp3 or xp2. I've heard people were happy with it too. Compare prices, eheim or filstar.

All of these are in Canada. I think jlaquatics is the cheapest for filstar. Bought lights from there before. If I'm not mistaken you're in BC, so are they.

I use 2 Penguin Biowheel 330's for my 55 and have never had a problem..... well I did once but it wasn't related to the filters. I have wanted to look into the canister filters though because of what I've heard of them on these boards... I'll be moving soon though so we'll have to put that thought aside for now until then..... I'm not sure if I want to give up the 2 penguins which are working just fine and go get a canister or just stick with what works now.

I am using a penguin biowheel now and it seems to be doing good, I will be going to a larger tank some day and may do a canister filter possibly even attempt the whole sump deal with a ten gallon tank putting heaters etc in the sump.
