Im into my 5th week of cycling my tank here and had a brown outbreak Look's like someone sprinkled cinnamon on top of my rock and onto the sand bed ? I'm curious if this is something that happen's through the process or is it something that i need to adress ? I would appreciate any comment's or thought's - Thank's guys .

I believe what you are seeing is cyano algae, which is a fairly normal "step" in a new tank. If you are using RO water it should pretty much take care of itself. You can do a search on the forums for cyano and get a lot more information.

I have been using ro water from the very begining and am hoping that maybe it's part of the process . When should i expect it to go ? Thank you

I'd actually suspect you're seeing diatom algae, not cyano. Diatoms are pretty common in new tanks, and typically easily dealt with by a little patience and a healthy cleaner crew.

Cyano is much different, and more difficult to resolve. Easy to tell the 2 apart--diatom is kind of 'dusty' when disturbed, cyano comes up in sheets, and has a very strong, stale odor.

What all will be in the tank in the long term? Some fish will pretty well eliminate cleaners from the setup, meaning manual cleaning will be your only option. Other fish will be fine with a variety of snails, crabs and shrimp, all which can be effective cleaners. IME, nasarrius, cerith and astro snails are great for all tanks they where won't be made into a snack.

Long term i would like it for it to be a reef tank - I just wanna be able to gain enough knowledge from the start so im not prone to make the big mistakes long term . I appreciate the help orion and will be posting from time to time . Thank's

I had the brown algea after about 3 weeks of cycling with damsels, it only lasted for a couple of weeks.

I did my cycle with 2 jumbo shrimp ,took a little longer but in the end it was worth it . Everything look's good with the exception of the diatom . This weekend im gonna add my clean up crew and will go from there .
