I am looking at converting from an hob to a canister filter. Just wondering if anyone thinks an eheim 2217 would be too much flow for a 55. I want to upgrade my tank size in the future so then this filter would still work.

I recently encountered the need to upgrade my filtration as well. The eheim 2217 was recommended to me and I was a bit concerned about the flow as well. I asked a few people's opinions on the matter and no one seemed to think that it was too much even with both my emperor 280's still on the tank. I guess it could depend on your stock though.

I really don't think it would be too much flow. I've got a 2215 and another canister on 55 and the combination is fine. Eheim filters tend to have lower flows than other brands.

I am running a eheim 2217 on my 29 gallon. As long as you aim the spray bar up towards the surface you aren't swirling any fish along. I am moving everything over to a 55 gallon next week and will be using the 2217 for that as well.

It is very rare to have overfiltering. Only fish that might have a problem with it is stagnant water type fish, like bettas or gourami. But most other fish love a current, and everything loves clean water.
