55 gallon natives tank?

Yeah they definitely look great in breeding condition...a little on the drab side when not but from what I've been told then are pretty easy breeders if given the right setup and conditions.

His parents have vetoed this tank, but now we get to build a pond as big as we can afford liner. We're going to stick to natives, and are going to plan out/start digging the site today.

Those pygmy sunfish are sweet! I'd take them mellow, but all my tanks are stocked enough as it is.

What kind of Pygmy sunfish does your friend have? And how much are they wanting for them? Would they be interested in maybe trading for some different native fish?

They are tiny, the Pygmy Sunfish, very tiny fish.
