For my new 55 gallon do I need a co2 system or is Flourish Excel good enough? I am currently using Flourish Iron and normal Flourish. I will get pics up soon.
Oh yeah, a little more than 3 watts per gallon. My parents just think that $200 is a little too much to spend all at once on an aquarium. And a 14 year old doesn't normally find $200 on the side of the road.
With 3wpg, you will need pressurized CO2. Excel is not effective at that light level nor is it economical longterm, same goes for DIY yeast CO2 which is better than Flourish.
If you reduce the light to 2wpg or lower, you can get away with a DIY yeast method.
I am in a similar boat. I have the JBJ Formosa-SS producing 130 watts over a standard All-Glass 55 gallon. I have a DIY yeast/CO2 operation with ladder diffusers. I have, for the last week, been using PMDD to fertilize. This set up has been in place for about three weeks (with the exception of the PMDD).
My water sprite has doubled in size and my java fern is reproducing like mad. I am not getting the same excitement from the microsword, the dwarf hairgrass or the chainsword.
