Hello!

Well I recently had an outbreak of.. something (ntd? tb? idk!) anyways, i am going to take out the remaining fish, sterilize, and recycle the tank before putting them back in.

This means.. I must replant the tank.

I've been reading up on it, but there is so much info, and so much conflicting info, that it is hard to research without getting opinions.

Anyways, here is my dilemna in re-planting the 55.

I am going to France at the end of August, through December/January, for school. Thus my (poor) fish will be in my brother/grandma's care. They aren't nearly as OCD as I am when it comes to water changes. Nor are they very knowledgeable about fish in general, or observative.

Therefore, I do not want anything that requires lots of care- fertilizing is OK, but no CO2 and all that.
Also, it would be GREAT if what ever I got ate up lots of nitrates, thus when they don't do water changes as often as I like, it wont harm my fish so much.

Tank specs:
right now, it has a sponge filter, and HOB. It has about an inch of "tahitian moon sand" for substrate.
It will be housing 2 plecos (about 2-3in long each. L75, and L264). Anywhere from 3-5 queen loaches, 3-5 cory cats, and possibly a male betta.
The lights are just standard lights that came with the kit (i can get better specs later, if needed.) I can upgrade them if necessary, but if the Betta is in the tank, it would be much better not to. (betta's dont like lots of light).
I do have some rocks and what not for anchoring plants if need be, and am not opposed to floating plants, although they have NOT done well in this tank in the past. (although i haven't done anything to help them either)

Also, i wouldn't mind putting an amazon sword back in. They are so pretty, and the last one thrived (split into 2 after about 5 months).

So, I would love to hear some suggestions and opinions!

Thanks so much
LeeAnna

Need to know more info about the lights, what kind, how many watts, kelvin rating? If it's stock, you probably only have about 15 to 30 watts. As for a low maintenance, low light plant that will eat up a bunch of nitrates, Hornwort.

I'll get you more info on the lights, although as I said, I'm willing to upgrade them if need be, so what I have now isn't set in stone.

Thanks for the suggestion. I also read something about water sprite as well.
