So I got very exciting news recently
I may be running into a 55 Gal tank that has my name on it. It will be an upgrade from my current 10gal.

I'd like to explore the different possiblities becuase while I love fish especially Cichlids/Eels/Puffers and other cool looking ones, I'm into the more exotic and "wth is that, did it just move?" type of things. And at the same time I care a lot about animals and wildlife so anything that I decide to take care of will be in good hands.

I see some of the tanks on here and I really like the sting rays, the crabs, the catfish, and all other cool ones.

I'm wondering what you guys can suggest.

if I had a 55 gallon I would have the same problem- not knowing what to put in there!LOL!
My son is setting up a 75 gallon with african cichlids - he is finding absolutely beautiful color- but the other day I was looking at all the other cichlid types and was blown away by the colors in those- reds, blues, greens, amazing- so I would be tempted to do cichlids- also, my son is 16 and the cidhlids are his first real attempt and he has had good luck with them. The four he has in his 20 gallon are 8 weeks old, now-
There are so many different kinds- and we are learning some are more(very) aggressive- some of the most unusual grow quite large and beautiful, but are more peaceful and don't do well with the more aggressive-
then there are the angels, monos, hmmmm.....decisions, decisions...

Um. No african cichlids are green. Also, If you do cichlids (with a lot of filtration) you should have about 15. In a 55 I would do mbuna only. Haps get too big and the peacocks are not aggressive enough for the mbuna.

^ In that case, cichlids would be the one and only type of fish I can keep in that tank, correct? Also all cichlids are freshwater? or Brackish?

Edit: I just wanna mension that i love the Blue Rams

Yes all cichlids are freshwater. You can keep some synodontis cats with them but thats all. Rams are american cichlids and can be put in a community tank.

Maybe I'll get some pirranhas. My friend had some and they used to have retarded strength

Smallest piranhas are fairly uncommon, get 6"+, most piranhas get 12"-18", 55g is a little small, don't you think?

Also, Janet, you said monos... These start off brackish and go to full blown salt, and get at least 10" long and really tall and need groups... Hopefully you knew this before suggesting them?

If you can find the eels (peacock?) that only get 7-10", you could have GBRs and some other 2.5-3"+ fish in with them.

Chromides may be your best bet for brackish water.;)

Keep them with ancistrus, cories and tetras.
