55g for an oscar?

I prefer a 48 by 18 footprint for a single oscar. Anything else is just too limiting, IMO.

how about a big jack dempsey?

i got two small ones in my 75 and they are fun to watch and interact with. also you could maybe get a JD and a Convict
how about that? but you said one fish so go for the Jd and lok around you could find a big one.

Wow, didnt expect to get 2 pages of responces from this! lol

But...its ok if it isnt an oscar, i would just like to have a big fish. And i have always liked JD neways so im sure that would work fine.

Thank you all for all your responces :)

What about a mated pair of jacks? Or maybe im just asking too much lol

I don't think it is a problem as long as you keep a close eye on them for any violent behaviors directed toward each other. Most cichlids have a violent relationship.

my female is in a abusive relationchip with the male. no bitting but territorail so i had to make spot for her and not him but then there are times were they swim right by each other. also they mated 3 times in 2 months i had them.

is a 36x18x20 55g going to be long enough for an oscar? your trading length for width

also, its not weird, its just not standard 55. I've been doing some shopping looking for an acrylic one. the extra width is really good for planted tanks.
a 55 is 48inches long and only 13 inches deep. Eventually the oscar will have a hard time turning around.

a 55 gallon is not big enough not only because of the space it allows, but the volume. with a 55 gallon, a fully gorwn oscar will need very frequent, big water changes and the tank could be unstable with fluctuations of ammoina, nitrite, and nitrate. a 75 gallon offers much more stability as well as room.

Well im thinking about getting rid of my 2 small/medium size cichlids in my 55g and just putting one oscar in it. Would that be ok?

Thanks!

I think you would be good IMO. Just keep the water changes up. This is based off of experience.
