I use only 2, 2liter bottles on my 55g.I also use a hagen mini elite underwater filter as a diffuser and co2 tube in the intake of my 40w whisper filter as another diffusser.
They both work quite well.
Lighting for the 55g are two 48" shop lights with 2x40w t-12 phillips daylight bulbs and a 2x32w t-8 sylvania daylight bulbs. less than $40 from Menards and HD.I also use flourish excel as an added carbon source and algaecide for the plants along with ferts.
