I would not recommend neons for a 5 gallon. IMO, 10 is the minimum.

neons are about the same size as white clouds and make the same amount of bioload.

Don't forget, guys, with all those great suggestions the gourami and betta will need a heater, and he said he doesn't want to get one.

Hmmmmm....

in that case 4 white clouds are you best bet as they don't need a heater.

I have a 5.5 gallon with 2 guppies and 3 pygmy cories. Good setup because you have both bottom-feeding and surface feeding fish (and the pygmies look adorable in groups, trust me). Just be prepared to do small water changes twice a week, since you'd be overstocking slightly.

I agree. But I also think white clouds are to big for a 5 gallon.
