so i guess i did something wrong. i went to clean out my tank yesterday and change about 75% of the water and thought to myself "i havent really seen my nerites move much in the past week. so i picked one up, empty shell. pick the second one up, empty shell. third, fourth. Fifth, not empty shell! yay! take a closer look , little trap door thing falls off....empty shell.

well, i feed cucmbers, algae wafers, tank is chock full of algae for them to eat etc...

i use prime, occasional excel, pressurized co2, dose PMDD and Phosphate.

now with 6 dead snails i figure i'd have an ammonia spike up the wazoo...i didnt test because i was in the middle of changing the water anywya...all the fish seemed fine, no unusual behavior, no fish loss.

i am at a loss for an explination....:1zhelp::1zhelp:

Hey coach, are they ones you have had for a while? I know occasionally when I get new nerites I have losses....I am thinking they just don't like my water. The spikey ones do fine as well as the tiger, but the red spotted have all died.

yes i have had them for a while (edit: aprox 2 months i have had them). i should have mentioned which ones i had. 1 green spot 3 tiger 2 zebra? i think? they were excelent, superb stock received from a forum seller. they were all happy and cruising around for quite a while

Not all too uncommon really. About six of mine that I got about two months ago have also died.. though I chalked mine up to starvation, they just weren't nearly as mobile and quick to food as my other snails.

interesting.

did the shells turn white?
not at all. they were all in pristine condition. except for the fact that they were completely empty.

I had a zebra nerite that died also. Everyone else in the tank is still thriving and breeding. Got mine from a seller here too.

I've been told Nerites dont live longer than a year, and you never really know how old they are before you buy them.

Also, could your tap have high Copper levels?

They are all wild caught, so maybe they just couldn't adjust long term? I also lost a zebra nerite, so I feel your pain a bit, dude. Sorry for your loss. You should keep the shells though, they are so pretty.
