6 gallon nano for dwarf puffer

Just because they survive in a small tank is not a valid reason to keep them in a small tank.

You can keep danios in a 10 gallon tank, but I would never have them in anything less than a 20 long. Bettas can live in cups, but doesn't mean you should keep it a cup.

And please re-read my post, I said most, not all.

most is not correct. DP is one type of puffer, and ALL DP require fresh water..

what you meant to say was that most puffers (in general, not drawrf) require BW. :)

Are live plants feasible for this size tank for someone who has not kept live plants before?

Yes! Does the tank come with fluorescent lights? (like Eclipse systems?) If so, hardy plants should do fine in there.

Personally I'd recommend vallisnaria to start - very hardy, cheap, spreads to fill the tank, and is pretty. You'd have to cut it back sometimes though. Any species that doesn't grow huge or need special conditions (CO2 injection, high light, etc) that you like would probably work.

If you trim the plants a bit with every water change, it won't be too much extra work.

There are many plants that will do very well in a 6gal tank.

Crypt-Wentii, Nevilli, Parva. --Dwarf sag, dwarf sword.--Anubius Nana, Just to name a few.

A 6 gallon is PERFECTLY fine for a DP. They are completely FW as well.

A planted tank would be great for them as well and it's definitely feasible.
Any low light plants would work.

I've kept a DP with ghost shrimp without problems before. It's pretty much trial and error. Try buying one ghost shrimp (they are like $.50 TOPS) and see how they do. If all goes well than go for it.

Thanks all; I think I definately will go forward with the tank. Thank you very much for all the hardy plant/DP specific plant suggestions.

I have lurked on these boards for quite some time before posting and have found this board to be unusually "positive" in nature. It's nice)

I have a DP in a 5.5g tank, and he's a very happy puffer, hunting all day long for imaginary snails, but sometimes he gets a real one ;)

My DP also like hornwort. It's a wicked fast growing plant, so it will need to be trimmed, you can just pinch bits of it off with each water change :) but they love thickly planted tanks. IME the more plants in the tank, the more you will see the DP!

Good luck with the DP.
I always wanted one but I don't want to feed live things.

Good luck with the DP tank, rodgeryng... As long as you provide it with what it needs and deserves, there shouldn't be a problem.

I wanted a small group of DP's when my brother traded in some of his cichlids, but he instead gave me a school of Black Phantom Tetras (3 Males, 4 Females)... I have tons of snails that are hanging around in my tank. I'm not complaining, as they are schooling now with the remaining 2 male black phantom tetras (which, for some reason became territorial with the other phantoms before)...
