60 gal hex

Definitely switch the UGF to RUGF, AFTER an extremely good substrate vac.

A UGF can not become a time bomb anymore than any other filter can. Many folk do not clean them as they should, but they are a great filtration method.

Still use UG's in a couple of small planted tanks and alternate reversing the flow. They just get a bad rap 'cuz their one of the easiest filters to neglect.

I have one tall narrow tank, a 47g. and it has been the most difficult to get just right. Finally painted two sides black, thin layer of black gravel and some goldfish. Gave up trying to hide the filtration and installed an Empire 400 HOB w/ a 12"L. retic sponge pre-filter & Purigen bags, a triple stack of 5" ATI sponges w/ a swiveling low-vol.power head stuck on top. Planted a bunch of vals & crinums but you can't hide all of those sponges. Water's great though and the fish don't seem to mind.

IIWM I'd add a canister and check D.O./add aeration...or get rid of the hex. Tall narrow tanks are just a pain IMO. Differences in thermoclimes and oxygenation, etc.

the reverse deal sounds like a goood idea to me. It sounds like that will blow the crud up so a hob can pick it up, is that how it works

Pretty much.

Also, you should probably rethink your tank stocking plans, however you decide to filter the water. If you're really interested in a wide variety of fish then buy another tank. You see that's how it starts...and then you wake up one day and you're seriously considering dechlorinating the kids pool.

Read about some of the other stocking suggestions that have been made on these forums and you'll get a better feel for what works well. Sick or stunted fish aren't much fun to look at.

you guys would hate me if you seen how crowded my tanks are now but i am definitely going to give them more room. i like to be able to see them from across the room. Not going to get rid of any fish(there my buddies) they are all fat and healthy, very rarely there is a casualty(about every 3 months, but I will work on getting them more room Thanks for all the help(you all saved lots of frustration)
This is a little disturbing.
You like to stock your tank so full so you can see the fish from across the room? Then unless you have a large tank, like a 125 with big fish, you are extremely overstocked.
Fat fish are not healthy.
A casualty every 3 months is a very high mortality rate.Fish live for years, not months.
