I have a new tank on the way an I have been trying to figure out what to stock it with. After reading through hundreds of forums and general websites I think I have narrowed it down to two groups.

Option1

F8's
BBG's
FW Moray

Is this a good mix? Is there any other fish that I could add to this group? and how many is a >safe< number? Since both BBGS and F8s do not grow into large fish I figured ~4 F8s, ~6-7BBGs and 1moray? Will the moray kill the BBGs?

Option2

This tank strickly depends on one key factor - is the silver needle nose gar a brackish water fish? I have read information on them that supports both arguements, although I am starting to think they prefer fresh water with some salt for falvor.

If it is brackish, what are some good tank mates for a needle nose?

I know I have a lot of questions, and I have honestly searched for the answers on my own... which only made me more unsure. So I thank anyone in advance that takes the timer to answer a few them, it is much appreciated. :)

Mixing puffers with eels can be tricky, especially ones that are aggressive like F8's. You'll need lots of decorations to keep the puffers interested and reduce aggression. The moray may go after the smaller fish--it depends on if the species you get is a piscivore or not.

Not sure on the gar--but don't they get around 2 feet in length?

Although most gar get to be rather large, the silver needle nose gar only grows to be 10inches (from what I have read). I am pretty sure it is a fw water fish but some sites claim that it is indeed brackish.

The eel will eat them all. Trust me, it will probbably be a G tile if you get it from a normal LFS, and they will without a doubt eat the puffers, bumble bee gobies and the needle nose "gar" (From first hand knowledge...not with BBG's just F8's and needle node "gar"). Also the needle nose gar dont usually tolerate others that look similar, and can be very aggressive to anything that looks similar. And yes the needle gar "Xenentodon cancila" is Brackish.

IMHO....If you really want the eel, get that with a cople scats, the eel, and maybe an archer too. You could try the needle fish...but its risky, cuz if the eel is hungry enough it will eat it. Hope that helps!!

um.. hes saying a needlenose WITHOUT the eel and the Fig 8s and the BBGs...plz read before posting.

Anyways, the "moray" would eat the gobies, the fig 8s would poison the moray IF the moray ate the Figure 8s... this is because Figure 8s have poison in their skin. Needlenose Gars ARE INDEED Brackish. I used to go floundering and spear fishing, and then a needlenose would come up to us and bug the heck out of us (they have sharp teeth).

Needle noses would be compatable with... probably itself...

I SUGGEST: FW Moray Eel, Siamese Tiger fish... see here http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Tanks/mytank3.htm

A nice tank w/F8 puffers & assorted gobies would work well. You could have BBGs, knight gobies & even dragon gobies in there.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Seaman, as oddball pointed out I had not planned on mixing the puffers with the needlenose. This did not seem like a viable group since puffers like to nibble on other fish and the gar would be a free floating easy choice. However, if the needlenose is indeed a brackish fish maybe it would be suitable in a tank with the moray? One being a top fish and the other more of a bottom dweller, no? I have read that the needlenose is fine with any fish that will not fit in his mouth.

oddball, pufferpunk - In the setup with puffers and bbgs the moray was sort of a late addition (in my mind) and I thought that it would be a bit of a stretch. Is there any other type of fish that might be able to survive the puffers? From what I have read puffers really only accept other puffers... Also, pufferpunk - of the fish you listed what would be a good balance of each in a tank this size? Would it be better to have more of one goby, and the puffer group - or a mix of gobys with a group of puffers.

Would the Moray not die or at least get really sick from eating the BBG`s? They have a poison that leaches from their skin do they not?? Usually this would deter anything from eating them!

A good example: I have a 29g w/3 F8 puffers, a pair of knight gobies, 6 BBGs & a dragon goby. All have a lot of decor to hide out in.

I did read before posting...I was just giving my suggestions....THINK before you cut someone down because it makes you sound like a jerk too. And there have been MANY posts of your's that I could have made rude or unnecissary comments to, but I chose not to because they do NO good. Thanks.

You could probbably get away with the eel and needle nose fish....just make sure and keep the eel well fed. And like you said...I wouldnt suggest the F8 and needle nose in the same tank. my .02
