60 gallon - filtration and heating

Hey all,

I have a 60 gallon fw tank currently stocked with two 1.5 inch bristlenose plecos.

I am using a 200 watt heater (temps set at about 79 degrees) and am using an emperor 400 filter with a couple carbon cartridges for filtration. Is this sufficient heating and filtration?

Sounds fine, but the way to know is:

If your heater maintains a constant temp, then it is enough.

If your water has no ammonia or nitrites, then your filter is enough.

What is the GPH rating of the Emperor 400.
The rule of thumb is that your volume of water in your tank should turn 6 or 7 times over in one hour.
i.e. for 60 gallons tank the ideal GPH rating on your filter should be anywhere between 360 to 420 GPH rating.

Thanks for the info. The Emperor is rated at 400 gph so I guess it should be fine for the tank.

I do have a couple new aquaclears (a 300 and 500) but don't know if or which one I should add to the setup. Any suggestions?

PS. Didn't know my BN plecos would make such a mess

Add the 500,you can't have too much filtration. You won't have to clean your filters as often. Never clean both filters at the same time.

You can clean both filters at the same time. You may get a very small ammoina high, but not enought to cause a problem.

Do you think the 500 along with the emperor would throw out too much current?
