65g stocking list

You stated that maroons get agressive as they age, but nowhere did you indicate that trying to pair her up would be a bad idea. I'm quite sad about what happened, 'I told you so' doesn't help at all. I happen to love maroons, I'm not a fan of ocellaris or percs. I bought her knowing she might turn into a big jerk, just had no reason to expect this outcome judging from her previous behaviour. She is what she is, and I love her anyway.

SF - Thanks for the kind words. I'm don't think I'm going to try again - at $40-$50CD it would not only be heartbreaking but expensive if another clown met the same end. Good luck with your tomato, if it works out let me know how you did it and maybe I'll get brave :)

Mooch - I'm in Toronto, howdy neighbor :) The only place I could get you a deal would be at PJ's Yorkdale, where I work. Honestly, a lot of our LR isn't spectacular, but we do have some nice pieces on occasion. I'm off until January so if you're looking now my advice is to go to Big Al's - I've found some good rock there (Scarborough location) but it's often uncured because they sell so much it doesn't have a chance to sit around in the store for a few weeks. If I'm not mistaken, there are a few good shops in Brampton. I'd get some rock from a few locations, that way you might get more variety of shapes and life.

Actually i won't be ready for live rock for atleast another 2-3 weeks.

But id hate to hastle you for a little rock. I'll look around, and look for some deals.

Thanks.

Blinky: Dan's Marine ha a point. Your clown may be older.
I got a 2 inch tomato and now have a 1.5 inch mate in there. There has been some bickering, but I do see Tomateeya eyebaling the new clown with interest from her/his anenome. So, we shall see. If not, the new fella goes to the LFS, in a day or 2. Lucky I'm on holiday now.
40 to 50 bucks? eek! My tomato's were only 25$ each, but tiney tank bred guys.

Yep, that's what the LFSs around here charge for wc maroons, it's awful. Sam is a white striped maroon, she was $40 but I got a staff discount on her. The one that she killed was a goldbar, $50 at Big Al's where the prices are generally low - our store would probably have priced him higher, he was gorgeous. Because they were both wild caught, Dan is right - I have no way of telling how old either of them are.
I'm so glad your pair is working out so far, somehow that makes me feel better :)

Well there has been some chasing, on Tomateeya's part, then they kind of bowed to each other sideways, taking a good look up close, circled each other and now are ignoring each other.
Tomateeya is hanging in her anenome and 'Tommy' is hovering at the top front of the tank. No longer any real agression. Keeping fingers crossed though.

I origionally had a choice between a maroon and tomato, both 25 dollars!! I wish I'd of known, maybe took the maroon lol.

BLINKS, IT WAS NOT A "I TOLD YOU SO" i did tell you maroons can and most will get aggresive, my guess is the next fish you add may have the same problem, if you do decide another mate for "sam" i suggest you move all the live rock around, so "sam" will be fealing less confident in a new arrangement, that way the fish have a better chance of pairing up, Otherwise you could sell same and get 2 new maroons and put them in the tank at the same time, that way works the best IMO, ps sorry about the loss, too bad i can't send you a maroon lol, they are $15 aussie dollars over here, about $11 US dollars for you.

I told you this would happen, why not sell "sam" and go for ocellaris clowns or percula, they are much nicer and suit a community aquarium.

WOW! That's a little harsh, especially considering you didn't actually say that would happen! I also don't agree with your advice to sell off an aggressive fish and just replace her. People become attached to their fish, maybe it's not the same as having a dog, but for many it's darn close... and for many, it's all they have!
I admire Blinky for taking this little bugger on and trying to make things work. Selling her off could only proove to be a mistake; the chances of her ending up in a less experienced, less patient home are very likely. Blinky has the experience and patience to try and make this work for Sam -- even if Sam ends up being the only clown in that tank. And, if you hadn't noticed, Blinky has clearly fallen for this fish.
Now, you may not agree, and that's fine - because I certainly don't agree with your approach to just give up, get out and move on.... marine tanks take patience and hard work. Quoting one of the great ones on this forum "only bad things happen quickly in a marine tank".

Now, for you Blinky; good luck! I've been watching your journals for awhile and thoroughly enjoy the experience! It looks like you're getting close to needing a new aquarium just to keep us entertained!

Well, I'm halfway on Mysis side on this one. The maroon might be a problem to all new additions. Didn't you lose a cherub angel awhile ago, unexpectedly. It might not be related to the maroon at all, of course. Just a thought.
I'd consider returning Sam and getting a small pair and trying again. A mated pair of clowns is a beautiful site. Cinammon clowns caught my eye at my LFS yesterday, pretty.
http://okanaganbettas.com/bcclowns/biaculeatus.htm Here is a website of Canadian breeder of
maroon and other clowns. Maybe you can ask a them a couple questions.

Mysis - first, no hard feelings. I'm really attached to Sam, she's a sweetie most of the time and very much a pet. Honestly, she seems goofy and happy and... 'clowny' enough on her own. She does backflips (literally, she'll run across the tank full tilt then flip end over end), chases things only she can see and expresses distinct moods - I'd love to see how nutso she'd be in a pair, but I'm not going to force her to accept a partner she doesn't want. Basically, she's not going anywhere :D

Decz - thank you for the kind words and support! I'm really glad you're enjoying the diaries, it helps me and I think it's fantastic if it helps or entertains others too :) You hit it on the head - Sam's a pet. She's my goofy girl and I've decided to accept her as she is and work around her *ahem* personality issues ;)

SF - I totally agree she'll be a terror with any new maroon, won't try that again. I added a pair of gobies and she's barely given them a second look - the only time she's harassed them is at feeding time and all it took to get her to leave them alone was offering her a piece of mysis over on the other side of the tank. She's not the sharpest pencil in the box, very easily distracted!

So... on to happy news regarding the stocking of my tank :)

I was working on Sunday and fell in love with exactly what I thought I didn't want for this tank - a little white sixspot sleeper goby. She's about 1.25" long, the smallest one I've ever seen. There she was, sifting away, and then I watched her run to the divider and try to get through. There was another, larger (2.5" or so) sixspot on the other side of the glass. All day the two of them tried to reach each other through the glass, it broke my heart. They're pretty plain fish, just white with a few blue spots on their cheeks, but their personalities made me reconsider what I want for this tank.

I did some research, then decided to take them home. I introduced them to the tank after a brief drip and haven't stopped smiling since. They're obviously a pair, and overjoyed to be together again. They're eating well; I hid food under the sand and watched them go fishing tonight, they've got nice round little bellies. They seem positively blissful together. One watches while the other feeds, and they spend time just swimming around and over each other - not to anthropomorphize, but it's like they're celebrating after thinking they'd never see each other again. They've dug a little burrow under a rock together and there's nothing cuter than seeing those little faces peeking out. I know they'll get nearly 5.5" long and will be a challenge to feed, but I did my research and I'm very glad to have them; they make me smile every time I look over at the tank :D

When i got my first sand sifter, the yellow head sleaper, it didn't feed for a week, except for sifting the sand, but as soon as they try a peice or brine, mysis, blood worm, what ever they get hooked, unfortunately mine wasn't wean onto frost foods, but it was easy enough to do anyway, i also like waking up to see a head poking out of it's burrow, also you may notice the sand sifters pull algae of the rocks and cover their enttrance to their burrow, its really cool to watch and mine does it just before lights out and it is kind of like he is closing the door and getting ready for sleap, i'll post a pic.

I know how attached people get to fish trust me, especially when they have great character like clowns do, i also realize that marines take patience as i do have one, i was posting suggestions of what blinky may have to do if sam turns against all new fish that enter the tank, and that can happen, normally clowns become very aggresive if they are already established in a tank and another is added, i was simply posting suggestions, and i am sorry if i sounded like i was giving bad suggestions or what ever, but for somepeople that could be the only thing possible, also just for the record i am not trying to sound nasty or anything, just trying to help.

Thankyou
Dean
