6ft Tank Fish suggestions

Just about to start constructing my new 6ft x 2ft x 2ft tank (dont ask me to work that out in Galls!) I will be putting my Severum, Oscar and blue Acara in but Im looking for ideas for tank mates. Thinking about fire mouths and green terrors but was wondering weather Texas or Jacks whould be okay. Im quite happy with having an aggressive tank just dont want my beloved sev being killed!
Suggestions welcome I have lots of tank space!!
 
It will be a 180 gallon. I've got an acrylic with those exact dimensions.

Just don't get two of the same species (so that they won't pair off) and everything should be ok. The Severum will definitely be the least dominant of the group.

How about a Chocolate Cichlid? Or maybe a Synspillum (like my Avatar)? How about 4 Tinfoil Barbs to add some schooling effect?

I worry that the Green Terror may be too much for the Acara and Severum. I'm not a big fan of Jacks..... Texas cichlids can be pretty aggressive as well, but may be ok if they are not breeding. And stay away from Midas and Red Devils as the males become very aggressive when mature.
 
Firemouths are my #1 choice. They would do awsome in your tank. I have one with my acaras and Oscar and hes a wimp. Jacks can iffy... I know some one with 2 6-7" Jacks that get bullied by 4" pink convicts and a 5" firemouth. But I have also heard stories of them being terrors aswell. I would stay away from the Texas and Green terror aswell.

the GT might shread the oscar and the JDs will be fine together or u can put a texas would be good though
 
Okay thanks for the advice guys. I have decided to sty away from the more aggressive cichlids. Thanks for your recomendation Sayersweb I have looked into getting a Synspillum and my LFS have said they can get one for me so thats a definate. Most of my fish I want to keep in male/female pairs so I can try to spawn.
So at the moment my stocking plan is as follows:
1 x Oscar
1 x Synspillum
2 x Blue Acara
2 x Severum
2 x Salvinis Cichlid/Yellowbelly
2 x Firemouth
2 x Plecs
and for a flash of colour a school of 5 Red Rainbow fish

So anyone spot any problems there? or any other suggestions? Do you think I could get away with any more?

Was also looking at the option on some Orange Chromides and Red brested flag cichlids.
Dont know if this would be over stocking though?
Need to work out my whole inch of fish to gallon thing
 
ok if you want M/F pairs of everything your going to have BIG problems when someone wants to spawn. You will get a LOT of aggression from everone in the tank. To cut back on aggression get only one sex. M or F
also with compatability of cichlids its hit or miss

PS: there is NO inch to gallon rule:especially with cichllids
 
Well the thing is I would like my fish to mate. I have a 50imp gall tank to put spawning parents if I have to and a 12imp gall tank for fry. How else can I spawn?
I thought If I went fo less agressive cichlids in a large tank with a lot of terretories their is less likely to be conflict and if I have a pair get out of hand move them or the fry to another tank?
 
Even with "less" aggressive cichlids when they spawn all bets are off. I have 2 2" convicts that rule my tank over a 2 larger Midas (4"). Not a very big size difference but they team up to take on ANYTHING larger. I also Have some smaller tanks that I will put the Parents and or fry in to spawn or grow out. This will take away from the aggression in the main tank. So if you want to take out the 2 you want to spawn and put them in the 50 and try to spawn and then put them back in the main tank once the fry are free swiming go for it. Also the tank will be large enough that if you have a lot of caves/hidding places it shouldn't be a problem but it still may be till you can get the fry out of there. With your list I don't see anything wrong and I would add a few target fish.
You said you going to start to construct your tank,are you making it yourself?
 
If this is your stocking list for the 180 gallon tank I only see one problem.

and for a flash of colour a school of 5 Red Rainbow fish

If the Salvinis are a male and female and they do pair off and start to breed you will have either lots of dead fish or the Sals will take over at least 4 feet of the tank and you will have lots of cichlids with shredded fins and missing scales hovering in the opposite corner. For the sake of your other fish only go with 1 Salvini (females have better color)
