6ft Tank Fish suggestions

I would have to agree with Reiner on the Salvini's habits. I had apairing in my 150g and when they had fry they took over 2/3 of the tank. My 9" Festea couldn't even go in there territory. I would recommend 2 females if you want 2, but not m/fd pair.

Right, point taken on the Salvini front I wont put in any males.
Oh and call me dumb but what do you mean by 'target fish' I havent heard this expression before?

Target fish = something fast and hardy to take some of the aggression off of your "prize" fish.

Convicts are good cheep and hardy you would need to grow them out a little first. Also I think giant danios, tiger barbs really anything that will take a beating and be able to run and hide.

Dither Fish = something to get a shy fish out and about.

I think Rainbows, Bala sharks, silver dollars,

Some fish can fit in both catagories. Anyone else.....correct me, add on.....disagree, agree.

Ok I get you. Dont really want to go for convicts though as they are pretty aggressive them selves and I wanted to steer clear of overly aggressive gish, as for tiger barbs and giant danios I think they will end up getting eaten by the Oscar once hes bigger!
Know what you mean about hardy though I have giant danios in my other tank and one has had a pectoral fin missing since I got him and it never grew back, he still nuts it around and chases everything in the tank though!
Any other ideas for suitable target fish?
As for the tank I succesfully won it on ebay at lunch time today so its all systems go!!
I or rather the other half will be constructing the stand for it and I will be cleaning the entire thing out throwing out all the gravel etc and re-landscaping it (see my other post 'how to make an attractive tank' in the general freshwater section) I got the tank complete with thiry fish, most of which my LFS are going to re-home for me and they will hang on to the ones I want to keep till my tank is cycled. They have been a great help and are lending me suitable containers to transport the fish in and everything.
Im now very excited!!!

Silver Dollars are great as dither/targets (and look nice) for large cichlids in large tanks. There high body shape makes it really hard for any cichlid to try eating them and they are really indistructable and can take the abuse some cichlids dish out.

nice find but 30 fish??? I know its a 180 gallon are they all large or are they neons? As in convicts they are not aggressive unless they are breeding so if you only get a male or 2.........but you said you wan to stay away from them. So I found this...........

"For mid sized cichlids, I have found Giant Danios, Tiger Barbs & Australian Rainbows work very well.

Larger cichlids are good with Silver Dollars, Tinfoil Barbs & Leporinus."

if you don't mind how much was the 180 I was looking into getting one that size.........if you do no problem

I never had a problem with giant danios and oscars, they did fine for well over a year. Then I threw in some tiger mots and they dissapered one at a time....odd :D

The tank I got for £87. Its a bit scruffy and needs a good clean up but it has no chips or scratches. The advantage is I get it with hood, lights, filter, heaters etc which normally make the whole thing a lot more expensive.
I dont think the guy has looked after the fish very well as the pic he sent me looks like the water is terrible. As for the fish looks like a non aggressive tank at the mo, I know there are 3 large plecs, some gouramis, bala sharks and I can see some rainbows in the picture. I will prob get a second filter and get slightly more powerfull lighting. Heres a pic of the tank.
I will show you some pics once i have stripped it down and set it up again to you what you think.

It will be a nice setup once you get it home and clean it. I'd keep the plecos, bala sharks and maybe some rainbows you just got some dither/target fish. Another filter , maybe a large canister filter. Keep us up-dated congrats on your new tank.
