72 Gallon Planted Tank Project

any advise on where to get cheap slate...my tank budget is nearly depleted and I still need to purchase something to help these plants grow...maybe root tabs or some other stuff idk?

Unfortunately the "Aqua Fern" and "Peacock Fern" are likely not aquatic, same with the dracenea which is the green and white one. I say the Aqua Fern and Peakcock fern are "likely" not aquatic because I don't know the species. I've seen them both in Petco/Petsmart and I think one of them may be Bolbitis (which is aquatic) but I don't remember for sure.

Anyway, point is, the non-aquatics will slowly start to die and rot. The Classifieds here are a great place to get plants. They'll always be true aquatics and they'll typically be a lot cheaper than anything you can find locally. With the 80 watts of shop lights you've got a good low light setup on your hands. You'll be able to grow lots of plants like anubias, crypts, java fern, java moss, and that wisteria you've got will really start to explode after a while.

Enjoy it!

any idea how often I should put ferts in my tank?!
man I should have researched plants...I can find anubias around here but haven't had any luck w/ the others. I'm tryin to go the cheapest route possible so hopefully shipping isn't much if I go the classifieds route.

slate tiles are usually cheap at home depot. They run a sale for 79c a tile pretty often. You might even get broken ones for free :)
I've also found overstock tiles at my local tile stores really for cheap. They will often give away a few free sample tiles.

A nice start! Would look even better if you removed the background and painted it a flat color to make the plants and fish pop.

In a low light setup you only need to add trace fertilizers. I'd grab a bottle of Seachem Flourish and use that as directs, maybe once a week or every other week.

As far as plants, don't rush. Just keep your eye open watching the classifieds, and a good low light package will come up, with plenty of plants all for $6-$7 shipping.

gotcha, thanks for the much needed advice. I have 5 LFS and none of them carry Flourish or Excel so I have to settle for this Nutrafin Plant Grow Iron Enriched plant fertilizer...hopefully I can use this stuff once a week too.

just flushed my skunk corycat down the toilet...I wonder if the CAE killed it, I could never catch that ******* and I don't wanna remove every obstacle from the tank. the only other fish in their are angels and other corycats (now onlly 3).

RIP little angel fish. One of my gold marble angels just passed away, he was covered in red blotches and the only thing I could do for him was put him in a sick tank w/ aquarium salt, still didn't save him:(
