Oh, ok, so I'm assuming your light set up is similar to this? http://www.directaquarium.com/Coralife-Lunar-Aqualight-Compact-4X65w-48in-p/11026.htm ...OK maybe not at all like that. SHHHH, it's the example I showed him, lol.

Not to sound like an idiot, but, to sound like an idiot...how were you planning on suspending the lights above the tank? Am I going to need extensive do it yourselfer skills or is it something we could figure out pretty easily?

I'm trying to bring the boyfriend on board on the lights, lol. We're planning to get all the equipment over the next month or so, then plant it. Do you know which stores in town have the best selection in regard to plants? Sorry, I know that that's kind of off topic.

Also, thanks for the explanation, and sorry if I'm being a pain. I want to do this right the first time, so I'm still in the process of doing my research...

Some hood ideas...

Stands and hoods are always better if you build, rather than buy. Any really good quality hood and stand will cost you $$$$$. Most of the ones at Petco and Petsmart are fiberboard.

On the other hand, you can go to a local building supply company (like Doug Ashey), and get a couple 2x4s ($2-3) and plywood sheets ($30-40) and make a super strong stand that will last you a very long time.

For a start, check out this simple design.

Here is another one.

One of my favorite unique designs is from someone called, "Niko" on AquaticPlantCentral here.

You can see a more elaborate 75 gallon hood here.

Another one for ya here.

Lastly, take a look at this one:

Learning to DIY is one of the most rewarding things about this hobby...

More info...

Hi Ravvlet,

Your questions are good. None of us can be experts at everything...we are all borrowing knowledge from each other. This can be a very complicated hobby! Just think about the complexity we are trying to reproduce...

I think lighting for the aquarium hobby has come leaps and bounds from what it used to be. We are all searching for the holy grail: low wattage with high lumens (or "brightness"). I see a couple exciting trends:

- T5-HO (T5 High Output) Fluorescent bulbs are becoming the "new normal" for the best, all-around lighting solution. They provide powerful lighting and are extremely efficient (almost 100 lumens a watt). They are far superior than most "power compact" lights in that T5s 1) have better reflectors (less light is lost), and they 2) last longer since they run cooler.

- LEDs. These are simply too expensive at this time to realistically use. However, they will continue to improve and will offer more lumens per watt than the most efficient fluorescent light. Even better: no bulb replacements! Most high-end LEDs are designed for something like 10 YEARS before needing a replacement!

What does this all mean? Well, keeping a planted tank is going to get easier for most people as the cost of this equipment continues to fall. Our sun powers our world; the same is true in an aquarium--your light is the single most important piece of a planted tank.

Anyways, on a side note, I have not found any good planted tank shops in Lafayette. I know that "Tropical Fish Bowl" off of Ambassador Caffery is pretty good, but they mainly specialize in Saltwater, so their selection of plants is pretty slim.

Planted freshwater tanks are like a subcategory of a subcategory of a subcategory. I think there are too few of us... Not many stores seem to focus any energy on serving the planted tank community. My suggestion is to get most of your plants on the Buy-Sell forums here, the plantedtank, and others. You can get some really good deals. You can also buy online, such as from www.aquariumplants.com. I have ordered from them and I think they are pretty good. Most smaller shops will get their plants from the MOTHER OF ALL SELLERS - Florida's Aquatic Nursery here. Hope that helps.

Oh, wow, thanks. That doesn't look too bad, I had to do similar work in my sculpture and 3D classes to get my Fine Arts degree, heh. I think we'd like to go ahead and get the tank and the lights.

And...Just read your second post! Thanks again. I actually work at Petco and I know our plant supply is pretty pathetic, heh. I wonder if Pets Unlimited has anything?
