75g New Discus

The blue turq was beat up badly the first couple of nights...one of his anal fins was chewed off half way and the edges of his fins are pretty ragged...do they grow back?
Fins should grow back depending on the severity of the damage. Water changes will help fix that.

Hi there just sharing my two cents.

When ammonia in fresh or saltwater reaches a toxic level sufficient enough, the surface areas of a fish's eyes, fins and gills are chemically "burnt", which causes the protective mucus from these surfaces to be removed. This then allows parts of the body to become exposed to deteriorate, which in turn primarily leads to external and/or internal bacterial infections. The occurance of fishes becoming ill from ammonia burns is most commonly associated with the following situations.

  • During Transportation
Whether purchasing fish from an online supplier or your LFS, if preventive steps are not taken, toxic levels of ammonia in the bag shipping water can be reached in a rather short period of time. This applies just the same for the water in a transport container when packing-up and moving fish as well.

  • During Acclimation Procedures
Tied into the situation above, after you have reached your destination the animals in the bags or transport containers need to be acclimated before placing them into their new home. No matter which method you choose to do this, the extended time they are in the water during the process, ammonia will continue or begin to build-up again.

What is ammonia burn?...my levels are all zero as I am changing water 50% everyday since they are new arrivals. As I said they are all beat up from when they where introduced a couple days ago. The dominant blue cobalt was very rough with two of them.

Thanks for the full answer on that ammonia burn subject, I have never read about it so ill watch for it.
I tend to stay away from medicating tanks for any reason. I usually just go with more water changes and hope the fish immune system is strong enough to get better. I have yet to lose a fish to sickness in years since using the water change method as a prohibitive.

and I keep calling my brilliant turq a blue turq since he is so blue!!! lol sorry for any confusion. More pic-a-tures a comin'!
