770 Gallon Community Tank

I never though an Oscar, green terror, Texas cichlid, and jack Dempsey would work in a community tank! That is an AMAZING tank!

I agree it is a great tank.

A large tank can help with some more unusual combinations. Also Oscars and Green Terrors are not as aggressive as their reputation suggests.

What's funny is that the dominant fish in the tank is an 8" clown loach. During feeding time, he will bully all the other fish.

In regards to the cichlids, they have a hierarchy:

1, Green Texas
2, Oscar
3. Jack Dempsey
4. Green Terror

The Green Terror used to be the dominant fish, but the Texas and the others had crazy huge growth spurts and the Green Terror hasn't grown much, so he's at the bottom of the pecking order now. They will chase each other from time to time, but nothing serious. I really don't like aggressive tanks where weaker fish are constantly picked on. I got rid of a Red Texas because he was a total jerk; the tank is much more peaceful now that he's gone.

Nice tank.

Sweet setup, but I wouldn't want to be one of those Rasboras when the Oscar gets big enough to eat them!

You have a good taste of aquascaping and choice of fish. From the video, I can see the motion of fish schooling in several groups in contrast to slow moving loner cichlids. Many big tank owners made the mistake of throwing in more and bigger fish to crowd the tank, but you leave your tank in uncrowded, more natural conditions. You also select large but peaceful cichlids with the exception of the green Texas which is moderately aggressive but no where near red Texas which has the Red Devel gene.

Your tank is actually a 900 gal. You multiply the dimensions in inches and devide by 231 to come up with gal. Is your tank made of plexi glass, kind of risky if it is all glass.

Thank you.

The Rasbora Tornieri are already 5" and I have read that they will get 6"+. I saw one at the shop where I bought these that was was easily 8" so I don't think it will be an issue... but time will tell.
It's a shape thing. A 12" Oscar can easily swallow an 8" torpedo shaped Rasbora. But it wouldn't be able to handle a 4" Silver Dollar. Time will almost certainly tell!

Thanks for the kudos. My goal was to keep the stock on the light side, and no fish that grow larger than ~15". Although now that they are all starting to put on some size, the tank is really starting to fill out- once they are all full grown, the tank might be a little too crowded for my taste.

The Green Texas is definitely the most aggressive. She laid a couple hundred eggs on the driftwood on Monday , but they were gone the next day...not sure what happened to them.

If you measure the internal dimensions of the tank (117.5"L x 33.5"W x 45.5" H), you'll get around 770G. The external dimensions are around 900 gallons, but the tank really only holds ~770G of water. If you add the water in my 150G sump (I keep it out 2/3 full) I have close to 900 total gallons. The tank is made out of 1.25" thick acrylic...it weighs 1,100lbs empty. I can't imagine how much a glass tank this size would weigh. I wouldn't want to have a glass tank this large...I wouldn't trust silicone to hold it together.

I agree on those silver dollars, they're beauts!

Thanks. One of my favorites as well.
