:( 84 degrees in 29g tank!

well as of late, the temperature has been stable around 79, which is where it was before the dilemma....I hope it stays that way but seeing as it will warm up in summer, I will probably consider a chiller or moving fish to 75g on main floor.

Hate to give ya crap about this, but 2 is not enough, and a 29gal is far from adaquate. The temp honestly wouldn't concern me too much, they get those types of temps in the wild. Bouncing the water temp up and down with ice and such is only gonna cause them stress. Being that warm though will increase their aggression levels, but they should be fine. Just keep an eye on them, and increase the airation in the tank, higher temps mean less O2 saturated in the water.

My tanks consistently run at 85F+ for months during the summer. There is no avoiding it and no one seems worse for the wear.

Just got to shorten the photoperiod, lower water levels or introduce an airstone to keep 02 up. Maybe set up a fan across the top of the water level. Keep the tank top ajar if you can. Switch to flourescent lights if you can, if you run incandescents that is.

I'd be more concerned with fluctuations - unless the temps start really climbing of course.
