90 Gallon Discus Tank (with pics)

Be careful about San Jose Water. It can be very unbalanced, and starting in 2009 they will be using chloramines instead of chlorine. That would be negative for your Discus.
prime neutalizes chloramine it breaks the chlorine ammonia bond and turns ammonia into ammonium (less toxic but used by bacteria)
if by unbalance you mean that..it is easily dealth with.

;)

Thanks for your comments everyone!

nice set up.

plants look good with discus but if you wanted biotope you may discover discus in dark waters with heavy leaf litter.

they do vary considerably tho

if you are running shallow substrate you can use pots for plants if you choose.
but selection of the plants will be according to light etc.

still a very nice set up.

I think my next tank I will try to tackle a planted and throw some wild discus in there. :)

Thanks for the heads up, I actually had a problem with the water last year where it contained 1 ppm ammonia. I now age my water for 48 hours and dose it with a good amount of prime.

Grate tank and fish love the sand . what temp do you run tank at and what type of heaters ???I can see they are both on >

Thanks, I have 2x200w stealth heaters and currently running it at 87 degrees Fahrenheit.

i love it,.. what kind of filter do you use for them? i've heard they are very fussy about their water, what do they like? hard? soft ? ph?

fishguys:

That is a very, very pretty tank with those discus.

I have almost the experience which you have but big question here!

You have what I would term a "community tank".

I would have very much enjoyed discus but went with angels in my community tank due to the temperature required for discus to be happy.

How are you dealing with this temperature issue?

Welcome! I love discus, so beautiful. What a killer set up- may I suggest some java fern or moss to cover the driftwood? That would grow beautifully. Either way, sweet tank! Awesome pics too, do you shoot with a canon? They turned out great. :cool-1:

Thanks dixienut! I am current running an Ehiem Professional II 2028. I do 2x50% water changes every week and age the water for at least 48 hours with prime. The PH out of the tap is 7.2 which is fine as long as you keep it consistent.

The other fishes in the tank are actually doing great and don’t seem to mind the temperature. All of my fishes that I keep have been known to get along well with discus and are able to live comfortably with higher temperatures.

Thanks Nuriel! Yes I do shoot with a canon... it's an SD500 (I'm assuming you saw it in the reflection?). It took me a while to figure out how to shoot indoors without a flash.

Nice tank!
