90 Gallon Surf-Line Tank (first tank, n00b, help!)

Thanks for all the replies! I actually considered painting the side of the tank that sits near the window while I was painting the back, but decided against it.

The reality is that I work 5 days a week and on weekends tend to be out of the house, so keeping those blinds closed 24/7 is not a problem for me. Thats what I bought them for anyways haha. If I start to see algae, I will either buy some vinyl (as recommended), or even look into some curtains to hang down.

(if you're curious, the reason I didn't just paint it is that I might be moving in a few years, and if I end up with a "fish room", I'd like to NOT have that side painted.

Regarding sand: I want to do pool filter sand, I really do. The only problem is the only sand I've found in my area resembles brown sugar, not white-ish sand.

So...can someone give me the name brand they recommend that is a good color (not 100% white, but still fairly white)? This way I can call stores and ask for that, instead of asking "what color is your pool filter sand?"

thanks so much in advance. Cheers!!!

when I used to buy PFS I'd get it from Home Depot. It didn't look anything like brown sugar....it was lighter.

I don't know where to get cheap "white" sand. sorry

I'll have to check Home Depot out. They don't have anything on their website, but maybe its in stores. Thanks!!!

Ok, I have a feeling that you will definitely like the look of an african chiclid tank. You could set up your tank exactly the way you wanted your reef to look, and they will look just like the beautiful salt water fish out there.

What kind of fish are you looking into right now???? With a sand substrate you could get a bunch of rhinogobius wui along with tons of other fish. My profile picture is of a male rhinogobius wui (white checked goby) in mating coloration.

Awesome build already, can't wait to see this done.

ps. I have no idea what to do with your sand problem.....

^^ Sounds good about the Africans. They look awesome As for fish I'm looking at...I haven't even thought that far out yet. I'd like to get one or two really "wow" type fish (like an eel type thing, or something else, haven't decided yet), and then a bunch of fish for the upper part of the aquarium. I'd also like a small shark or two, but that may not work. And a handful of shrimp just for kicks.

I figure once I figure out my sand problem I'll start thinking about stocking it haha...

(Edit - I was thinking of the fire eel, but I've also looked at the tigrinus as well. something really "dominant" that people will immediately recognize as the "it" thing of the tank)
