From the posts I've read, most people who have had GW treat it once via either a UV sterilizer or a diatomaceous earth filter and have never had the problem come back.
I had GW this past month by accidentally stirring up my substrate and releasing ammonia into the water column. Cleared it up by using a Magnum 350 filter w/ diatom powder. It hasn't been long enough to see whether it's come back or not.
