I have a 55 gallon aquarium with a couple of fish in it. I have a Rena Filstar canister. But, I was looking to suppliment my canister filter with a HOB filter. I do not think there can really be too much filtration. I was reading some reviews on some HOB filters and I am confused. If people say something is "noisy", I cannot figure out if they are refering to the motor humm or the splash/waterfall noise. My brother has a Penn Plax HOB on his aquarium and it does an amazing job. But since his aqaurium is smaller, I do not know if the Cascade 300 would have a loud motor soud. I am concerned with the motor noise because it is in my bedroom. I like the waterfall noise as long as it is not too loud. I guess I really do not know about these things.... So, what would be a decent HOB filter to supplement my canister filter?

I have a few AquaClear HOB's and I think they do a very good job. As far as noise goes, I don't really hear mine. As far as the trickling sound goes, just keep the water level up to reduce the distance the water falls from the filter.

Yep...seems most folks complain about the water more so than any impeller or motor noise.

Thanks! I was just wondering about the motor noise because I has a Whisper that sounded like an old fridge.

Im not really a big fan of HOBs as "Mech / Bio" filters when the money can better spent toward a canister filter or DIY sump filter which is a far better return on Mech / Bio filtration. I do use mostly on some tanks becasue the small water reservoir in back makes an ideal hydroponics medium for bar rooted house plants to grow without special lighting, pulling nitrates out of the tank and cleaning the air inside the house. So as a nitrate filter I love them.

If you looking for something that is super quiet, looks great for an HOB, is easy to clean, and easy to operate for $33 I would recommend the Penguin 350. It has a nice fitting large cover over the entire bio-wheel section and the water drop off is shaped to almost be silent when dropping water, and of all my HOB's (Aqua-Tech, AquaClear, Regant) the Penguin 350 is by far the quietest both in impeller noise and water flow.

But if your looking for somthing that can really clean and polish your tank crystal clear my recomendation is that you be far better off buying a HOB that does a far better job in this area then any of those mentioned, The Magnum 250 for only $45.
