Look I don't want to sound like an old fussabout, nor do I want to be that guy who points out others' slight grammatical mistakes....but there are two specific things that lately have just been annoying the poo out of me when I read forum posts.
The single most annoying thing on this topic is this incessant use of apostrophes where they do not belong. "Is it safe to keep frog's with my gourami's?" "Should I go with two Penguin's or two Aquaclear's?" "There are now several Flourite's available." This crap is annoying me. Is it that difficult to understand the difference between the use of the letter S in making a word possessive, and the use of the letter S in making a word plural? When in doubt, leave the apostrophe out!
The other is: "this is a whole nother topic." No. No it is NOT a whole nother topic. It's a whole other topic. There is no such word as "nother." Never has been; never will be. The word "another" is a compound of "an" and "other." As in, "I will have an other beer." (Which obviously I need right now.) It isn't, "I will have a nother beer." "I just drank a whole other beer. Now give me yet another one!"
I have tolerated all sorts of errors in my day - from double negatives, to the neglect for the difference between less and fewer, to horrid misspellings and even to biting my tongue when someone can't figure out the difference between what it is they're doing over there with their there. But I'm sorry, I'm just getting plain annoyed with these other two things. Seems I view them as somehow different than the normal grammatical imperfections of the English speaking world. It's like every time I see them, I find it oddly annoying. :wall:
tell me why!
