a couple questions on dealing with ick

2 teaspoons of tablesalt per gallon will take care of the ich but if you choose to go this route instead of the quickcure, add activated carbon to the filter and do a 50% waterchange first (carbon does not remove formalin).

I'll just quote myself again incase you did not read everything. Quickcure contains MG with will get removed by carbon and formalin which does not get removed by carbon. Formalin + Salt = fish death so a 50% waterchange is a must.

Got it rrkss!

Will do the water change as soon as I get home with new carbon. Since there's still gonna be that formalin in the tank, how long should I wait to do the next water change? And have I hurt the fish too bad by throwing in all this stuff at the same time?

Not sure if I'm dealing with Ich or not

My bp have black spots on there sides and on the tips of there fins.

This is my first tank and have had the fish for 3wks. My tank is set at 78 degrees. I also have a bubble stone in the tank.

The pet store where I purchased the fish, suggested that I do a 50% water change and then add 3 Tablespoons of salt and turn the heat up to 85.

I wanted to make sure that this is correct. The owner really seemed like I was bothering him, when I was asking what to do. He was happy selling me these Hybrid fish - at the time I had no clue what I was buying or of the deformities. Buyers remorse :duh:. But now that I have them, I want to take the best care of them I can. (If or when for next time - I'll know better)

I also have yellow labs in my tank.

Any advice is appreciated!

If they are black, it's not ich. By "bp" I'm assuming you mean "blood parrot"?

How big is the tank?

Can you both describe, in great detail, what the spots look like and post a very clear picture?
Details like: how big they are, how many are there, are they raised, scattered, powdery-looking, do they *totally* resemble ich spots, but they are black and so forth

Oh, and can you start a new thread with this informaiton, please? We're hijacking someone else's and this isn't ich.

Thanks, Gina

Since you are only on your first dose, a 50% waterchange should bring the formalin to safe levels. If you really want to, a 50% waterchange daily is a possibility. The ich article is very good at explaining salt dosing to supplement waterchanges. I doubt you've hurt the fish at this point but the sooner the salt is in to kill the ich, the faster your fish will be helped.

Well, the water change got done last nite, and added the salt with the new water. Temp only got up to 84 deg, with the heater running at max. But already this morning I could see that almost all the fish were active again and swimming and eating. But the spots haven't fallen off yet.

The male betta is still lying and hiding, and one of the females seems to have lost most of her bottom fin. Once the spots fall off her I can put her in a bowl and see if she grows it back.

At this temp, how long will it be before the cycle of the parasite is done? And I can go back to a normal tank?

And is the parasite harmful to humans? Cause my hands have been in that tank water an awful lot in the last few days!

I've always treated ich at 80-82*F but 84*F is fine. The spots will take about 4 days to fall off. After that it will take 3 more days to be destroyed by the salt giving you a cure in about 7 days though I reccomend 10 days so that you remove the chance of a single stray ich parasite doing damage. Good to hear that your fish are getting more active again.

Thanks to everyone for your help! My fishies appreciate it! I'll be watching and counting.

What I find frustrating is that the Quick Cure directions make no mention of adverse effects if you increase heat or add salt, or combine healing methods. More info isn't a bad thing! :rant2:

Anyways, if this ever happens again I will know what to do. Hopefully it won't (crosses fingers!)
