I have an EMP 400 HOB filter. WIll cutting a bed sheet to fit the media basket work? ALso i broke up some ceramic pots boiled them then placed them in the basket as well. Will this help any or am i trying too hard?

Yes, flat foam like that.
e.g. AquaClear & fluval foams (but they come in different sizes). 2 fluval foams on top of one another = approx thickness of 1 AC foam.

Do you mean the batting used for making quilts? Yes. If you mean a bed sheet? No, it is too fine and not porous enough.
The ceramic pot pieces will work. The only drawback is if they settle too much and fit together too tightly. This will prevent good water flow. That's why many ceramic media is round :)

star_rider, ever heard of the tank scheme done entirely in tin foil? Or was it duct tape? :rolleyes:
