1) Where is the cheapest place in the US online for bits and bobs like a powerhead and protein skimmer?

2) How much, on average, does a piece of LR weigh (I realise it's highly variable!!)

3) Does anyone know of good marine LFS in either the New Orleans, Miami or Orlando areas?

This place sells Odyssea/Jebo. A lot of people say it's junk, but I have a Jebo canister filter that is working great for a year or so now. They have a little of everything and it is cheap...

Aquatraders lights have caused two fires that I know of, personally, not to mention all the ones you read about online. They aren't UL listed and there's a reason people recommend you stay away from them ;).

http://www.petsolutions , http://www.thatpetplace.com , http://www.bigalsonline.com are all reputable mail order supply places.

Live rock is really hard to just guesstimate. You're going to want to tend towards the 8-10 pound pieces, in my experience, so you aren't dealing with all fist sized rubble pieces. The general rule is a pound per gallon of water. I tend to go with a bit more to be on the safe side, and because I like the look ;).

Thanks - I've discovered Ebay here has lots of bargains equipment wise so might not need to ship to my US address then collect it, thankfully!

LR; I'm trying to get my head around how much a decent sized piece weighs so I can work out how much to budget for!!

Remember the three maxims: "caveat emptor" (buyer beware), "you get what you pay for" and "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is".

This IS an expensive hobby. While you are able to save money through smart purchases consider the house of cards that a SW tank operates upon and how one cheapo piece of equipment can destroy it all.

Take your time, do your research and plan carefully.

CR - a very good point. However, of what I've bid on so far the Skimmer is a Deltec and the powerheads are Rios - both apparently good brands??

Also, there is only 2 marine shops in all of Ireland..I'm in the US maybe six times a year. It makes sense to pick up stuff where there's more competition and therefore range doesn't it??
