Just got back from a trip to the Barren and Green and got to see some of the fish in Teleost's pics in person. Any of you who haven't already done so really ought to get a mask and snorkel and get in the water; it'll bring you a whole new appreciation of your fish.

They would be really neat aquarium fish, but I've heard they like to hang out in the bottom of the tank and aren't very active at all.

Not so. Most darters are bottom fish, but they are fairly active, searching for food and 'darting' about; they are comparable to saltwater blennies. They are not as frenetic as many schooling fish, but they are not hiders and sitters like many cats and big predators. Some darters, such as logperch, also spend a lot of time in the water column.

Darters and minnows are a great combo, with the more active minnows in the water column and the darters hanging out lower down.

I completely agree with Notophthalmus. Darters are usually active and maintained much like bottom dwelling tropicals that are not catfish. They stay in the open and often perch atop structure. I also agree that NA native Cyprinids make excellent tankmates. Both Darters and Cyps very quickly recognize the owner and beg for food just like any fish.

did you put any of them in yoru tanks
