A goldfish was just thrown into my 37....

At the risk of being totally and completely flamed by the "80 gallons per goldfish" crowd, yes. That's close to 15 gallons per fancy, or 20 for the first and very close to the recommended 10 for each subsequent. Moors can get pretty large when they are taken care of the right way. I love to see a couple of really beautiful fish in a well scaped larger tank. If you can go larger, that's great, but the 29 would suffice for a while.

:iagree: While 29 gallons might be a little tight, as long as you have plenty of filtration (more than 10x gph) and keep up on your water changes, I would say that it is enough for 2 black moors. I would also recommend going with a bare bottom tank as it will be easier to clean and since goldfish are very messy, it will make maintenance of the tank a lot easier. I will also guarantee you that you will not regret keeping the goldfish 1 bit! If you would like more info on goldfish, check out the forum on kokosgoldfish.com or pick up "Fancy Goldfish" by Erik L. Johnson. Here's a link to the book:

I can guarantee you goldfish aren't any messier than my Green Spotted Puffer. No need to go bare bottom so long as you can use a gravel vac properly.

I had two black moors in a 29 gallon and they outgrew it in less than a year. I had a hard time keeping it clean and they obviously needed more room after that time. 15 gallons per goldfish is the bare minimum I can recommend - it's not like it's terrible, but I don't think you'll be happy with it permanently.

I think before you get in too deep, you should try and rehome the fish. For one thing, it's going to be hard to stock it with much else. White clouds may or may not work - mine (see below) ate them I think, because they kept slowly disappearing. Everyone here warned me this would happen, but I chose not to listen ;) Zebra danios would have worked better I think. I would have liked to have kept a paradisefish, but I think it would have nipped the goldfish. Right now I have two of them in a 55 gallon with a bristlenose pleco and it's very trouble free. Never had a problem with plec/goldie aggression or sucking, but then again I feed veggies weekly.

I guess it kind of depends, too, if they're hybrids or not - I have one who is mixed with a Ryukin I believe (his eyes aren't so googly, and he is half gold now) and he is MUCH bigger than the true black moor, with the very googly eyes and the coppery (not gold) belly.

What kind of plants are you going to keep in there? Goldfish are like cichlids, they need tough plants.

I was thinking some java fern/moss, maybe some of my rotala because it's going crazy in my 55.

Yeah I'll stick with a single black moor in my 37 then. I really want to get another weather loach, so I was thinking about doing this for the 37:

1 Black Moor
2 Weather Loaches

Do you guys think that the loaches might be cramped? I don't plan on using up much floor space for decoration, so I think it might work out ok. If weather loaches won't work in the 37, then I'm getting rhinogobius wui.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how the goldies ate the white clouds. I'll take your word for it though... Are there any other coldwater schoolers that might work? (besides danios)

Pictures of scape and such coming tommorow, what's the best goldfish staple food? I was thinking Wardley's pellets....

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Wardleys, simply because I have had floating issues with it. I have just started using Omega after using Hikari; I like both, and have never had floating goldie problems with either food. With Moors, I think floating pellets are best, as they seem to have a hard time seeing sinkers, but I have fed both, and none of my telescopes look like they are starving-- in fact, they are kind of round bodied.

alright, I'm deciding against putting weather loaches in.

I'm going to pick up either omega/hikari, it depends which one the LFS has.

Do you guys think they might mess with white clouds tho?

hmm... I'm thinking about putting him in my 55, temp is 75. He'd be fine with fish like black skirt teras and harley rasboras right?

The only thing I might be worried about is the tetras getting nippy. Moors are so slow-swimming and dopey and those big, flowing tails might be tempting for nippers. I have heard of people keeping goldies in a community tank like that. I'm sure he would love sharing a 55 gallon with a bunch of little fish! He would have plenty of room to grow.

The white clouds I had were really small juvies from the LFS, so could easily feet in the big one's mouth. I never caught him in the act but I did see near misses when it was feeding time...goldfish are notorious for getting otos and cories stuck in their throat!
