A Matter of Perspective

You see with your brain. If someone has an issue with their brain they may see/interpret colors differently. We don't all see colors the same way. You could easily show this with an experiment using LSD. The LSD group is likely to see a lot of colors you wouldn't see.

SO. MANY. COLORS!!

Weltanschauung...I am telling that is the answer to this thread, everything is dependent upon that.
Nicht ganz mein freund!

That depends on your point of view :) I personally think that the world itself is meaningless, and only has meaning in that we gave it something to mean. If we chose to change the name from "blue" to "Blurple" (you get the point) those who had never known that "blue" meant "burple" would consider "blue" to be a meaningless word. Imagine if a group of people were born without the ability to see color. All the names of the rainbow, in fact, rainbow itself would be meaningless to them, for they have nothing to attach the word to.

First off, those "idiots" were smarter then many people here, secondly, they are my friends, don't insult them please, and thirdly, that was the point of the discussion. It's a matter of perspective, it can't be proven true or false. They keep their minds open at Sporewiki, which is something many have trouble doing, both here and elsewhere I've been.

An open mind isn't always a good thing. It depends on what you leave it open to. Maybe murder and child molestation aren't that bad. How would you know if you don't leave your mind open to them? And I see that you don't get the main point either Travis. The entire point under discussion by its very nature precludes any meaningful analysis so there's really very little value in analyzing it. It's something to discuss around the hookah at 2 AM. As far as originators of the discussion in question being idiots, I'm sorry about it, but I see nothing I can do to change the situation.

Oh Sub, you might not hear this very often, but you give me the warm fuzzies inside. This place needs a "like this post" button.

Perspective is an interesting position of debate. Perspective, greatly influenced by one's environments and stimulus decides what that person interprets according to their different senses. Perspective is an interpretation.

If I go to a previously unknown location, what I sense may make me feel comfortable or not accordingly. These interpretations clearly trigger the "fight or flight" mechanism I may have.

As someone that has color vision problems, I know that I do not "see" the same colors as another person might. It is not a deficiency of my eye functions but rather an interpretation of the signal that goes from the eye to the brain. I was taught this as a part of my rehab after stroke. Certain colors I have a real problem with but was taught how to deal with it. Some of my senses were clearly rendered inop from the brain damage. Things like smell, taste, hearing and vision all took hits as did sense of touch and others. Having to sit back and deliberately think on how to interpret what we once could take for granted is not an easy task. It is something that you work on every minute of every day to be able to function as a productive person instead of just existing on some unknown plane. This stimulus is why we teach kids at earlier ages than we did years ago. It was found to have a great influence on brain development.

Personally, I don't care if someone has a different perspective than I do, even though it affects our behavior. I can accept or reject your position, making decisions based on my perspective and the value I place on yours. Sometimes this sharing of perspectives can make make things go smoother or create friction. The willingness to learn another perspective or interpretation can enhance inter-personal relations. The one thing that is difficult to make some people understand is that I may be willing to hear your opinion but that doesn't mean it is the right action for me. My rejection of it doesn't necessarily mean I think it to be wrong, it's just not for me.

I think the rejection of an idea creates a defensive position for the suggestion that is unwarranted. The rejection can be from many reasons and should never be taken personal and yet it is. Oh well, that's life and no one gets out alive!

I hear it more often than I need to, but considering the source in this particular instance, thank you very much!

Dosvedanya!

whoa, whoa, I was just trying to get a friendly discussion out there for everyone.... no need to be so cichlidy.

I realize that. But when it's a friendly discussion based on uneducated opinions vs uneducated opinions, when there is a very real scientific answer, it makes me cry a little inside that more and more society would rather play make believe than take the time to discover the truth. If you were actually interested in the real answer, you could easily find it. I was just trying to let you know that.

If you want a conversation that science can't prove, based totally on opinion and perception, try "Is there such a thing as being in love with someone? Or is there only the love of the idea of being in love with someone?" Science can't get anywhere near that one!

I should also add, that I used to ponder the color question a lot when I was in elementary school. But my middle school science teacher set me straight when I asked him about it. I'm no stranger to wondering about it, but when there's a real answer, that's what I want.

The words we use are symbols, they are not the thing but rather they represent the thing. What you perceive when an object reflects 475nm light back at you is called blue, and perceived as blue because when you were young every time you experienced it, you were told it was blue. It's entirely possible that your brain (or mine) is perceiving it as green. That's great, but even if you are seeing 475nm light as green, you call it blue because that's the symbol we've assigned it. If I asked you to give me the blue ball, you'd know what I was talking about. And you'd reach down and give me the green 475nm ball that we all agree is blue. Everyone whose orbital receptors and cognition chips are maintained within two standard deviations of the mean will agree.

We test this every time we communicate. Words are symbols of what we mean and they allow us to convey that meaning in novel ways. If they didn't have meaning they would be nothing more than unintelligible sounds or markings.
